Deadline is Friday to Apply for Open School Board Seat

Only one person so far has filled out an official application for the seat vacated by Michael Mishlove. Also Monday, the board created an ad hoc committee for the energy efficiency project.

The Shorewood School Board has one official applicant for the seat vacated by Michael Mishlove's resignation, and the deadline is Friday.

The application is provided here, and applicants are encouraged to answer the questions and prepare for a meeting with board members in the next two weeks.

Also at Tuesday's School Board meeting:

  • The board approved the creation of an ad hoc committee for the energy efficiency project, which would "increase both the efficiency and transparency" of the board, said President Rob Reinhoffer.
  • A number of items were brought forth in the Superintendent Reports for purposes of preliminary discussion, including the opportunity to provide parking for customers who patronize businesses along Capitol Drive by opening nine spaces at Atwater School for such purposes, especially between the hours of 4:30pm and 9pm.

"The village doesn't have to pave more space if there is already parking available," said Superintendent Martin Lexmond.

  • The board also discussed the matter of student fees, and to what degree fees should be reduced, if at all. Reinhoffer also suggested the board consider reducing fees for military families as well as free/reduced lunch qualifying families.
  • The initial budget report was presented for Fund 10 and 27 revenues and expenses by Business Manager Mark Boehlke.  So far this year the line items for Youth Options (college coursework paid for by the district for high-achieving students) and textbook costs were the only outliers.  Reinhoffer congratulated the district for bringing overtime maintenance costs under control for the first fiscal reporting period in recent history.

Boiler Project Community Info Sessions

The district is hosting three community information sessions next week relating to replacement of a boiler at Atwater School:

  • 11:55 a.m. Monday at the Senior Resources Center
  • 7 p.m. Monday at the Shorewood High School Library/Media Center
  • 7:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Shorewood Men's Club

The issue will come to a vote at the next regularly scheduled School Board meeting on December 11.

Regarding student fees, I've asked to round up the few bucks and been told it can't be done--why not allow for this and earmark the extra for families who need fees reduced, and see where we are? The last time I checked with the previous superintendent, we had a very high percentage of the fees being paid which surprised me. Certainly, parents of students on free or reduced lunch should be paying no fees, not reduced fees. The only reason fees make sense is to get around the punitive school funding laws that make it difficult to send our money directly to our schools without a big cut going outside of our district.

N - According to the meeting, the rounding up is also back on the table as a suggestion - and thanks for your input!

I am not surprised that more folks have not applied for the School Board position.
Whether true or not, it has appeared in the last several times there have been vacancies on the School Board or Village Board, that those who applied were given a cordial interview --- but the Boards already had their selection made --- and possibly current members even invited their favorite to apply so they could be appointed without having to be elected. This especially seemed to be the appearance when the Village Board appointed Thad Nation, who was a newbie to Shorewood and was nearly as knowledgeable about the Village issues than other applicants who had more time here (disclosure -I was one) --- Reality or Perception ?

Good to hear!

Please note the open session for community to discuss the Energy Efficiency Project (aka Boilers) on Monday, December 3, at 7pm in the SHS Library.

As of Wednesday, there are now 3 applicants for the Board opening.

I would not purport to comment on how things appear to you; and, your perception creates your reality. That said, to the extent your comments are directed at the School Board, I think you are flat out wrong. I was the last person appointed to the Board--that was back in 2006. I assure you that I was neither invited to apply (just as I was not invited to apply when I applied for appointment in 2001) nor was I a pre-selected favorite of any kind. I urge you not to post this sort of unfounded speculation; it does not serve the Village or District well--and your comments are not excused simply because you prefaced them with the qualifier, "whether true or not."

So? What was used and what harm does it cause? Although ironic this may provide more good thanRead More harm. What is written on the application sign?

The bluff and other areas need to be planted with things that will snuff out the weeds. They areRead More harmful to animals and possibly birds, of which there are many at atwater. Obviously not many animals but there are squirrels and rabbits and other native mammals. Not to mention the kids at the play area. Most adult humans can handle an occasional wiff of a pesticide but not children or animals. I have held several pesticide licenses in my day so I have had much course work on this. I am surprised the village has done this but I know restoration is about to begin - again - on the bluff and perhaps they are trying to rid the bluff of all the weeds. It is a shame that the 15+ kids they hire every year can't be up there weeding instead. I don't know what else they could be doing as the village has reduced the amount of annual flower beds that need to be maintained.

The liberal minded Patch had it going their way for some time. Then, the contrary opinions became aRead More "voice to be heard". So, like all liberal media, just shut down the "free speech". Speech that educates the people is a NO-NO in the world of "public education". Have no fear, other avenues to educate the public is on the way.
CowDung June 10, 2013 at 12:53 pm
Given the amount of liberal propaganda that is posted around here, one does have to wonder if PatchRead More intended to make it more difficult to reply to comments (and set the record straight)...
Mike Stevens June 14, 2013 at 07:20 am
Wow, PaulRevere, AKA the hardest working person in America, who only takes 1 day per month off andRead More who believes all evil is related to public schooling, has time to not only comment on St. Louis area Patch sites, but on Milwaukee area sites as well? Paul, perhaps you should go back to school to check your grammar--other avenues to educate the public ARE on the way, not IS on the way. Oh, you must be too busy working 20 hours a day (but finding tons of time to comment on several Patch sites) to check grammar

Sure Keith. I am sure every time you use the term Tea Bagger it is not vulgar. The symbol for yourRead More failed recall movement was a Blue Fist. No one wants to be ruled by a fist and I don't see how that is vulgar when your own logo was a blue fist. Try again.
Keith Schmitz June 6, 2013 at 01:03 pm
Are you assuming we're stupid Steve? Don't. BTW -- you called yourselves Tea Baggers. We're onlyRead More using the term you selected. What a great PR roll-up for this group of Neanderthals. You're problem with that any fister reference is usually the speaker feels it is where his head should be.

I think if you look at most of the sites still running the older version, you'll see the sameRead More messages of impending doom we got just before the change...

I got the name wrong, it was "Bellmore", not Belmont. It was part of rollout of what atRead More the time was being referred to as "Patch 2.0" in the press. It was rolled out to five towns in the Long Island, NY area in September of last year. I'm going to attempt to post a link to an article:: http://www.poynter.org/latest-news/mediawire/189296/aols-redesigned-patch-websites-make-a-play-for-neighborhood-groups/

"I think if you look at most of the sites still running the older version, you'll see the sameRead More messages of impending doom we got just before the change... " | I think that's true, Bob. I poked around at a number of Patch sites around the country and the 'Welcome to the New Patch' articles were full of the same complaints we are seeing here. | This Patch redesign seems to be the 'New Coke' of websites...
