Shorewood School District Closes In On Superintendent Hire

Board members fielded range of comments from community members during Tuesday's meeting, then went into closed session to discuss the hire. No firm date was set for completing the process.

The Shorewood School Board, on its last leg of a search for a new district superintendent, fielded a wide range of comments from community members Tuesday during its regular meeting.

Community members voiced their support for both finalists: Kirk Juffer, principal at , and Martin Lexmond, superintendent of the Kohler Public School District in Kohler.

"I was impressed with Mr. Lexmond," said resident Mark Sweet. "I thought he was optimistic and excited. He came across as a solid, optimistic and stable force."

Lexmond has been the superintendent and principal in Kohler for two years. Prior to that, he was the director of curriculum and instruction as well as the director of the Department of School Innovation at Milwaukee Public Schools.

Juffer has been principal at Lake Bluff for 21 years and was previously the director of instruction at Holmen School District.

"I'm a big supporter of Kirk's ... he is a real consistent, persistent type of fellow," said resident Steve Vogel. "I think he would be a wonderful superintendent."

The pair participated in meet and greets with community members and stakeholders last Tuesday and Thursday. School board members went into a closed session after the meeting to deliberate who to hire.

"We are hoping to wrap it up as soon as we can," School Board President Rob Reinhoffer said.

Reinhoffer indicated board members will continue to meet behind closed doors until a decision is made.

School Board member Michael Mishlove implored community members to come to board members if they have questions and concerns about the process.

"There is a lot of misinformation (being bandied) about," Mishlove said.

Current superintendent Blane McCann has served as superintendent of the Shorewood School District since August 2003. His salary of $152,250. , and shortly after school officials for a new superintendent.
