Messwood Draws Whitefish Bay in WIAA Playoffs

Learn more about the matchup of these two North Shore neighbors, whose only losses were by one point (Whitefish Bay) and three points (Messwood).

Say this for Messwood’s first-round football playoff matchup — it’ll be easy on the gas tank.

The Messmer-Shorewood co-op (7-1) earned a No. 7 seed in its eight-team bracket of the WIAA Division 2 tournament, and visits North Shore neighbor Whitefish Bay (7-1) at 7 p.m. Friday.

Messwood routed Living Word Lutheran 56-14 in its final game of the regular season, according to WisSports.net. Its only loss was a 43-40 defeat to unbeaten Lake Country Lutheran. Messwood’s lower seed was likely due to playing in the Midwest Classic Conference, populated with very small private schools.

The Blue Dukes were co-champions of the North Shore Conference, with only a one-point defeat against Germantown scarring their resume. They allowed only 36 points in eight games, according to WisSports.net, and scored at least 40 points four times.

The winner of the Messwood/Whitefish Bay game takes on the winner of South Milwaukee and Brookfield Central.

I hope WFB wins. God likes winners.

Good luck to the Messwood team in the play offs. You boys have worked so hard and had an amazing season, We are so proud of all you and your coaches have accomplished these past two years. Don't listen to the haters, you all rock.
Bob McBride October 14, 2012 at 12:14 pm
Agreed. And remember, it's not whether you win or lose, it's the degree to which your helmet insignia is unoffensive to those watching you win or lose - which, again, really doesn't matter. Just have fun, don't get hurt, don't hurt anyone (physically or emotionally), play fair, play courteous, give the lesser players a break once in awhile, not too much aggression...well...you get the picture. We'd really rather you were in debate club or on the chess team or participating in a non-competitive affirmative reinforcement circle - but those really aren't great revenue generators.
Oh, and you kids from Messmer - keep the Catholic crap to yourselves, please. That is all.
Debra Schwinn October 14, 2012 at 12:41 pm
Bob, your dislike of the adults in this community does not justify being rude to any of the players on this team, no matter what school they are from.
Bob McBride October 14, 2012 at 01:29 pm
Debra, I'm fairly confident the players have the ability to read what I posted above and take it in the spirit it was intended (assuming anyone that age even bothers with Patch). Certainly it's no more harmful to them than the idiotic controversy over the helmet insignia.
Mike October 14, 2012 at 05:00 pm
Bob, it is really interesting what you project on to the populace of Shorewood: your own bigoted hypocrisy. Good luck with that.
Bob McBride October 14, 2012 at 05:29 pm
How do I do that, Mike? Care to be specific? Or did that just sound good to you?
Mike October 14, 2012 at 05:41 pm
Bigoted: you strove to characterize a population this way:"Just have fun, don't get hurt, don't hurt anyone (physically or emotionally), play fair, play courteous, give the lesser players a break once in awhile, not too much aggression...well...you get the picture. We'd really rather you were in debate club or on the chess team or participating in a non-competitive affirmative reinforcement circle - but those really aren't great revenue generators.
Oh, and you kids from Messmer - keep the Catholic crap to yourselves, please." Hypocritical: You did so in the passive aggressive, indirect, non-confrontational way that you did.
Bob McBride October 14, 2012 at 05:58 pm
And how is that hypocritical, Mike?
Hypocritical is people from Shorewood constantly referring to the community as "diverse", having no problem with taking money from a Catholic organization in order to help support the team, but refusing to let them use their school insignia in conjunction with the Shorewood emblem on a helmet because it includes a cross. Now if you'd like me to expand further on that and you don't mind a little topic drift, we can explore the recent 10th District election and yet another example of the hypocritical nature of Shorewoodians referring to their community as "diverse" and what they do when given a chance to prove just how "diverse" they truly are. Your "bigoted" remark is just nonsense, Mike. Do I think everyone in the village thinks like that? Certainly not. Do a significant number? If I'm to go by some of the comments I see here from time to time from residents regarding expenditures for sports activities and their preferred focus for those funds, it's quite possible.
Mike October 14, 2012 at 06:10 pm
Your words stand, Bob. Don't bother trying to walk them back.
Bob McBride October 14, 2012 at 06:14 pm
I'm not in the least, Mike. I stand by all of them. Including the ones you're apparently unwilling to respond to.
Bay Bill October 14, 2012 at 06:40 pm
I'll admit I'm biased and have a kid in a school that Messwood beat up on - and my beef is with the coaches, not the kids. However, Messwood's playoff fever (stickers included) ends at WFB. Messwood has 1300+ students to field a team. The student population of the entire rest of their conference schools, combined, has 1800+ students. Woo-hoo they're 6-1. Maybe the wildly successful Messwood team should step back into a D1 or D2 conference where they belong and see whether they need playoff stickers? See ya in the Bay on Friday.
Lyle Ruble October 14, 2012 at 07:53 pm
@Bay Bill...There's no bias between the kids and most of the parents between Shorewood and WFB. Unless its changed since my kids went to SHS, half their friends lived in the Bay. They also had friends at Nicolet and Homestead. You're making something out of nothing. Let the kids have fun. Both teams have won their places. The coop team between Messmer and Shorewood had a lot of years of being at the bottom and now their at the top you want to spoil it.

It's a football game. Let the kids enjoy the win and stop using this as a forum to spew your political views.
Bob McBride October 15, 2012 at 01:45 pm
Too bad someone didn't suggest the same at the School Board meeting where they used a helmet insignia for the same purposes.

Steve ® June 10, 2013 at 03:55 pm
So? What was used and what harm does it cause? Although ironic this may provide more good thanRead More harm. What is written on the application sign?
Cricket June 11, 2013 at 01:31 pm
The bluff and other areas need to be planted with things that will snuff out the weeds. They areRead More harmful to animals and possibly birds, of which there are many at atwater. Obviously not many animals but there are squirrels and rabbits and other native mammals. Not to mention the kids at the play area. Most adult humans can handle an occasional wiff of a pesticide but not children or animals. I have held several pesticide licenses in my day so I have had much course work on this. I am surprised the village has done this but I know restoration is about to begin - again - on the bluff and perhaps they are trying to rid the bluff of all the weeds. It is a shame that the 15+ kids they hire every year can't be up there weeding instead. I don't know what else they could be doing as the village has reduced the amount of annual flower beds that need to be maintained.
PaulRevere June 10, 2013 at 12:40 pm
The liberal minded Patch had it going their way for some time. Then, the contrary opinions became aRead More "voice to be heard". So, like all liberal media, just shut down the "free speech". Speech that educates the people is a NO-NO in the world of "public education". Have no fear, other avenues to educate the public is on the way.
CowDung June 10, 2013 at 12:53 pm
Given the amount of liberal propaganda that is posted around here, one does have to wonder if PatchRead More intended to make it more difficult to reply to comments (and set the record straight)...
Mike Stevens June 14, 2013 at 07:20 am
Wow, PaulRevere, AKA the hardest working person in America, who only takes 1 day per month off andRead More who believes all evil is related to public schooling, has time to not only comment on St. Louis area Patch sites, but on Milwaukee area sites as well? Paul, perhaps you should go back to school to check your grammar--other avenues to educate the public ARE on the way, not IS on the way. Oh, you must be too busy working 20 hours a day (but finding tons of time to comment on several Patch sites) to check grammar

Sure Keith. I am sure every time you use the term Tea Bagger it is not vulgar. The symbol for yourRead More failed recall movement was a Blue Fist. No one wants to be ruled by a fist and I don't see how that is vulgar when your own logo was a blue fist. Try again.
Keith Schmitz June 6, 2013 at 01:03 pm
Are you assuming we're stupid Steve? Don't. BTW -- you called yourselves Tea Baggers. We're onlyRead More using the term you selected. What a great PR roll-up for this group of Neanderthals. You're problem with that any fister reference is usually the speaker feels it is where his head should be.

I got the name wrong, it was "Bellmore", not Belmont. It was part of rollout of what atRead More the time was being referred to as "Patch 2.0" in the press. It was rolled out to five towns in the Long Island, NY area in September of last year. I'm going to attempt to post a link to an article:: http://www.poynter.org/latest-news/mediawire/189296/aols-redesigned-patch-websites-make-a-play-for-neighborhood-groups/

"I think if you look at most of the sites still running the older version, you'll see the sameRead More messages of impending doom we got just before the change... " | I think that's true, Bob. I poked around at a number of Patch sites around the country and the 'Welcome to the New Patch' articles were full of the same complaints we are seeing here. | This Patch redesign seems to be the 'New Coke' of websites...
