Since the 1980s, the Shorewood community has united for a good cause.

The Shorewood Games — a two-week fundraising campaign to benefit the MACC Fund (Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer) — kick off with an opening ceremony on Friday at 10:45 a.m. in the high school auditorium. John Cary, Executive Director of the MACC Fund, will speak, followed by a student-made video highlighting the importance of the games.

Later that night, male students will strut their stuff in the Miss Shorewood pageant competition. A $5 pasta dinner will lead the event at 7 p.m. in the youth center, followed by the pageant at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

During the games, students will participate in activities, competitions, and events, many during the school lunch period. Students earn points for their class by participating in activities. Community members, families, and younger students can also get involved.

Other Shorewood Games highlights include Jailhouse Rock, where district administrators must raise $1,000 by Saturday, or risk being thrown in jail and forced to raise the remaining cash to post bond. A reception will be held at Alterra on N. Prospect Ave. at 9 a.m. to kick-off the event.

This year, the district will continue its tradition of students and faculty shaving their heads in the name of ending childhood cancer, during the Buzz Cuts for Cancer event, slated for March 20.

Over the decades, the games have raised $135,000 for the MACC Fund, and hopes are to bring the total to more than $150,000 this year.

The games will wrap-up with closing ceremonies on March 22 at 10:45 a.m. in the SHS auditorium, with gold medal t-shirts awarded to the high school class with the most points at that time. A check to the MACC fund will also be presented.
