Lake Bluff Writers Shine in Statewide Essay Contest

Two sixth-graders showed off their writing skills, and picked up first-place accolades, by penning essays recounting fond memories of older people in their lives.

Lake Bluff sixth-grade students David Deshpande and Ari Cobb have been named first place winners of a statewide annual essay contest in which they penned papers recounting their relationships with older people.

David wrote an essay titled “The Garden" while Ari penned “You, Me and Buttons.”

On the local level, honorable mention went to Nathan Taylor and Celeste Guse.  Nathan wrote “My Grandpa and Me” and Celeste wrote “Scraps.”

The contest is sponsored by the Wisconsin Association of Senior Centers and the Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups and invites local six-grade students to write a 300-word essay about an older person they have a special relationship with, like a grandmother or neighbor.

The Shorewood Senior Resource Center has participated since 2004.

The students will read their essays at the Shorewood Senior Resource Center during an award ceremony on May 14, noon to 1 p.m., in the , 3920 N. Murray Ave., (lower lever of the Shorewood Public Library.)

David and Ari are also invited to the 35th annual Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups Annual Convention, July 26 and 27, in Stevens Point. They will each be presented with a plaque and a check for $150 and will be asked to read their essays for the attendees.
