Here is this week's roundup of Shorewood High School sports, courtesy of Athletic Director Bill Haury:

Girls Swimming – On Wednesday, the girls extended their unbeaten dual meet record to 5-0 in the Woodland Conference and 8-0 overall, with a dominant 112-57 victory over Pewaukee.  The 200 medley relay team of Genevieve Hayes, Rachel Munson, Diana Yakshimamedova and Kristin Malone began the meet with a first-place finish.  The was followed by Ellen Stello taking first in the 200 freestyle while Chloe Borut took third.  Melissa Clausen then took a first in the 200 individual medley, with Leila Kane taking third. Malone took first in the 50 & 100 freestyle; Stello took first in the 100 butterfly; Munson won the 100 breastroke and took third in the 50 freestyle; Clausen took first in the 500 freestyle; Hayes took second in the 100 backstroke.  The 200 freestyle relay team of Stello, Munson, Yakshimamedova and Malone finished first, as did the 400 freestyle relay team of Clausen, Stello, Borut, and Hayes.  The team of Sarah Gruber, Lucy Petrick, Emily Kregloski and Kane finished second in the 400 free relay.

On Saturday, the girls hosted the Small School State Invitational and won the meet in exciting fashion.  It was a very strong step into the championship season, as the team had not won this meet since 2003.  The meet began with the 200 medley relay team of Clausen, Munson, Stello and Kristin Malone taking first place.  Hayes then took a fifth in the 200 Freestyle. Stello took first in the 200 individual medley, followed by Munson in second. Malone then took 1st in the 50 freestyle in a new meet & pool record, 23.83. That time was nearly a half-second faster than the time for her third-place finish at state last year. Malone followed that up with a first in the 100 freestyle which was also a meet and pool record, 51.66.  That time would have won last year's state meet by nearly a full second. Stello took second in the 500 freestyle with Genevieve Hayes finishing fourth. The 200 freestyle relay team of Clausen, Munson, Hayes and Yakshimamedova took fifth. Clausen finished third in the 100 backstroke, followed by Munson taking third in the 100 breastroke.  It all came down the final event, the 400 freestyle relay with Shorewood leading second-place Plymouth by only four points. The Greyhounds dominated the event, taking first in 3:44.28.  The team consisted of Stello leading off, Hayes keeping the team slightly ahead. Borut battled to keep it close for Malone to finish it off.  Shorewood was the champion, with Plymouth the runner-up and Whitefish Bay in third.

Johnson ran 8 times for 127 yards and Davis had 10 carries for 112 yards. Dennis was 1 for 2 for 98 yards and one interception.  The team finishes the regular season 4-2 in conference play and 4-4 overall.

Unfortunately, McMurtry was not able to play in Thursday’s second-round regional game against Catholic Memorial and Coach Gentry had to ask Kosta Ebben to move from his regular defender position into goal.  The No. 2-seeded Crusaders capitalized on Kosta’s inexperience and scored two first-half goals to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.  Coach Gentry needed Kosta’s defensive mobility so Kosta went back to the defender position and freshman Ian Brockman took on the challenge to stop Catholic Memorial in the second half.  The move worked well as Ian stopped a couple good shots and Kosta anchored the Greyhound defense that shutdown the Crusader offense the entire second half. Elliott Lane scored to cut the lead to 2-1, and the Greyhound offense was relentless, but time expired before they could tie the score and send the game into overtime.  The varsity team finished the season 8-8-3.

Cross Country – Friday, the harriers competed in the Woodland Conference Championship and came away with dual championships.  The girl’s won their first conference championship in over 15 years behind the triple threat of Haley Holan (second place), Abby Pech (third place), and Haley Florsheim (fourth place).  Angie Sperry ran a strong race finishing in 14th place, Laura Gould was 27th, Lindsey Morris was 43rd, and Madee Ferone was 45th.

The boys earned their fifth Woodland Conference title in six years with a strong 37 points, 42 ahead of second-place New Berlin West.  Charlie Stahl led the team with his third place finish, Peter Morris was fifth, Jacob Goldberg was sixth, Michael Dellutri was 11th, John Pake was 12th, Sam Kuhlmann was 13th, and Mayan Essak was 14th.

Boys Volleyball – The boys finished second at the Whitefish Bay Invitational.  They are now 20-5 for the season and remain undefeated in the Woodland Conference at 7-0.

Girls Volleyball – The varsity team competed in the Woodland Conference tournament on Saturday, finishing second in the pool with Pewaukee and Greenfield.  They won against Pewaukee, 25-21, 24-26, 25-13 which is an indication of the progress they are making as they lost to Pewaukee during the regular season.  They lost to Greenfield 25-13, 25-16.

The varsity team will begin regional play as the No. 1 seed with a home game on Tuesday against Saint Joan Antida.
