Greyhound Update: Soccer Team Begins Sectional Play Tuesday

Cross country teams win their invitational at Kern Park.

Here is this week's roundup of Shorewood High School sports, courtesy of Athletic Director Bill Haury:

Football –  Friday night, Messmer-Shorewood traveled to Jackson to play Living Word Lutheran.  Due to some questionable calls in the first half, the team was down 21-6 at halftime.  They came out strong in the second half and scored twice to close the gap to 21-20.  As the sun set and the light was fading, LWL scored twice to assure their 35-20 victory.  The team is now 3-4 overall and 3-2 in Midwest Classic play. Messwood faces Wayland Academy at home Friday with a chance to qualify for the WIAA playoffs.

Boys Soccer –  Monday, the teams traveled to Cudahy and won 4-0.  Kieren Quinan scored the first goal, with Henry Cummings scoring the second. Henry Kruger scored to extend the lead to 3-0 in the first half.  Danny Jaber finished the scoring with a goal off a penalty kick to clinch the 4-0 win.

On Wednesday, the team lost to Brown Deer 1-0.  This leaves their Woodland Conference record at 5-3-3 and 7-7-3 overall.  They begin regional competition on Tuesday with a rematch against Brown deer at Shorewood @ 6:30 pm.

Girls Swimming – Wednesday, the Greyhounds traveled to Brown Deer, and won their fourth Woodland Conference dual, 100-70.  The 200 medley relay team of Genevieve Hayes, Ellen Stello, Lucy Petrick and Diana Yakshimamedova took first.  Melissa Clausen finished second in the 200 freestyle. Hayes took second in the 200 individual medley, while Leila Kane took third. Yakshimamedova finished second in the 50 freestyle. Stello finished first in the 100 butterfly.  The 200 freestyle relay team of Clausen, Chloe Borut, Yakshimamedova and Hayes took first. Hayes also won the 100 freestyle, while Melissa Clausen finished second. Borut won the 500 freestyle, while Stello won the 100 backstroke with Petrick taking second. Borut also won the 100 breastroke.  Finally, the 400 freestyle relay team of Stello, Hannah Miller, Petrick and Clausen finished first.

Cross Country – Thursday, the teams hosted the Shorewood Invitational at Kern Park.  Both teams won with the boys 48 points over New Berlin West and the girls 3 points over Pewaukee.  Peter Morris led the boys team with his first-place finish. He was followed by Charlie Stahl in second, Jacob Goldberg in sixth, Micheal Dellutri in seventh, and Sam Kuhlmann in 15th.  Abby Pech led the girls with her first-place finish. She was followed by Haley Holan in second and Haley Florsheim in third.  Angie Sperry finished in 20th place and Laura Gould was 26th. 

Girls Tennis – The girls competed in sub-sectionals on Tuesday, sending the entire team onto sectional on Thursday.   At the sectional meet, the team finished third with Saabriah Abdullah qualifying for the state meet with a third-place finish at No. 1 singles.  Victoria Nelsen will also go to Madison with her second-place finish at No. 2 singles.  Elana Lambert finished fourth at No. 3 singles and Carline Tweddell finished fourth at No. 4 singles.  Mary Matoba and Lizzie Tews also qualified for state with their fourth-place finish at No. 1 doubles.  Kirsten Repins and Grace Hayes just missed qualifying for state with their fourth-place finish at No. 2 doubles.  Ellen Gough and Ari Schwartz also just missed qualifying for the state meet with their third-place finish at No. 3 doubles.

Boys Volleyball – The boys .   In the first game, the Greyhounds never trailed as they rolled to a 25-18 victory.  The second match was the toughest with the Trojans leading most of the match before Shorewood rallied to win 26-24. This seemed to break Tosa’s spirit as the final game was never in question with a 25-13 victory to secure the match 3-0.  Leading the team were Andrew Mueller with 15 kills, Ken Plaisted with 34 assists, Karl Apfelbach with 3 blocks, and Adam Kessenich with 12 digs.
