Greyhound Update: Runners Sparkle at State Meet; Swimmers Take Woodland

Boys volleyball team also is a conference champ, and heads into sectional play Tuesday.

Here is this week's roundup of Shorewood High School sports, courtesy of Athletic Director Bill Haury:

Cross Country – On Saturday, the teams competed in the WIAA State Championship meet in Wisconsin Rapids.  The boys finished third with 114 points.  Charlie Stahl led the team with his 14th-place finish.  He was followed by Peter Morris in 20th, Jacob Goldberg in 27th, John Papke in 51st, Sam Kuhlmann in 61st, Mayan Essak in 74th, and Michael Dellutri in 84th.  This was the 14th consecutive trip to state for the boys that capped a very successful season.

The girls placed sixth, up five places from  their 11th place finish in 2010.   They scored 185 points and were only 13 points out of fourth place.  They are a young team and will not graduate anyone from the state team.  Six of the girls ran times that placed them in the top 20 all-time for Shorewood girls performances at the state meet.  Haley Holan led the team with her 18th place finish in 15:11.6.  Abby Pech was right behind her in 20th at 15:11.8.  Haley Florsheim was 27th, Angie Sperry was 11th, Laura Gould was 115th, Lindsey Morris was 118th, and Madee Ferone was 137th.  This was a very successful year for the girls as they won the first-ever conference title for a Shorewood girls team and also a sectional title.

Girls Swimming – Also on Saturday, the girls won their sixth straight Woodland Conference title. The girls scored in 23 of their 24 entries and they had to battle all the way to the final leg of the final event to win the meet by 8 points over second-place Wauwatosa West.  Not only did they win the meet, but they set four conference and pool records, won eight events including all three relays and grabbed 10 medals and a fair amount of season best times.

The meet started with the 200 medley relay team of Melissa Clausen, Rachel Munson, Ellen Stello, and Diana Yakshimamedova winning in 1:54.42.  The second relay team of Leila Kane, Anna Gruber, Lucy Petrick, and Chloe Borut finished eighth. Munson then won the 200 individual medley and Borut took eighth.  Kristin Malone won the 50 freestyle, in 24.01, a conference and pool record!  Lucy Petrick took seventh. Malone also won the 100 freestyle in 52.32, another conference and pool record.  Clausen was seventh. Stello took second in the 500 freestyle while Genevieve Hayes took third. The 200 freestyle relay team of Clausen, Malone, Hayes, and Munson won in a pool record time of 1:42.42.  Clausen took fourth in the 100 backstroke. Munson won the 100 breastroke in a conference record time of 1:09.02.  Finally, the 400 freestyle relay team of Ellen Stello, Genevieve Hayes, Chloe Borut, and Kristin Malone won in a conference record time of 3:45.07.  The girls now move on to the state qualifying sectional meet at Plymouth on Staurday.

Boys Volleyball – On Monday, the varsity team defeated South Milwaukee, 25-10, 25-18, 26-24. With the win the varsity team wins the Woodland Conference title for the second year in a row.  Leading the team were Bryan Frieseke with 9 kills, Tim Perry with 37 assists, Karl Apfelbach with 3 blocks, and Adam Kessenich with 13 digs.

Shorewood hosts Brookfield East at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the sectional semifinal.
