Greyhound Update: Football Team Can't Hold Third-Quarter Lead

Girls cross country team has strong finish at Racine Case Invitational.

Here is the weekly update on Shorewood High School athletics, courtesy of Athletic Director Bill Haury:

Football –  Friday night, Messmer-Shorewood hosted Kenosha Saint Joseph, one of the top football teams in the Midwest Classic Conference.  The defense set the tone early in the game stopping the Lancers offense and keeping them off the scoreboard.  Taylor Dennis threw a 30-yard pass to Jamal Hayes to give Messmer-Shorewood a 6-0 lead in the second quarter.  The Greyhounds kept this lead until under a minute left in the first half when St Joe’s scored on a 35-yard touchdown pass.  Messmer-Shorewood came out of halftime fired up and scored early in the third quarter an 11-yard touchdown pass from Taylor Dennis to Xavier Johnson to take back the lead 14-7.  Unfortunately, shortly after that Alec Grimmer was injured and left the game and that’s when things turned for the Greyhounds.  St Joe’s scored 28 straight points, 14 in each quarter, to leave with a 35-14 victory. Dennis was 14 of 27 passing for 184 yards and two touchdowns.  The loss leaves Messmer-Shorewood at 3-3 for the season with two regular season games remaining.

According to WisSports.net, the Greyhounds must win only one of their two remaining games — at Living Word Lutheran and home to Wayland Academy — to qualify for the WIAA playoffs.

Boys Soccer –  Last Monday the team traveled to Greenfield.  The varsity came away with a 2-1 victory.  Kieran Quinan scored in the third minute of the game on a nice assist from Henry Cummings.  The Fightin’ Hawks scored before the half to tie it at one goal apiece.  The Greyhounds came out strong in the second half with Henry Kruger scoring 3 minutes into the half on another assist from Cummings.

On Wednesday, the .  While they out shot the Cavaliers 10-8, one shot got past goal keeper Alex McMurtry to give Thomas More a 1-0 victory.   Shorewood is now 4-2-2 in Woodland Conference play, with two conference games remaining.

Girls Swimming – Wednesday, the Greyhounds hosted Thomas More/Saint Francis, winning in convincing fashion, 110-60. Winning the 200 medley relay was the team of Chloe Borut, , Diana Yakshimamedova and Melissa Clausen.  Genevieve Hayes and Rachel Munson then went first and second in the 200 freestyle, and also 1-2 in the 500 Freestyle.  Hannah Miller took second in the 200 individual medley, followed by Leila Kane in third and Anna Gruber in fourth. Clausen won the 50 freestyle followed by Yakshimamedova in second and Lucy Petrick in third. Clausen also won the 100 freestyle with Borut taking second. Ellen Stello won the 100 butterfly and the 100 breastroke.  The 200 freestyle relay team of Petrick, Ellen Stello, Rachel Munson and Genevieve Hayes took first as did the 400 freestyle relay team of Hayes, Clausen, Yakshimamedova and Munson. The girls are now 3-0 in Woodland Conference dual meets and 6-0 overall.

Cross Country – The girls competed at the Racine Case Invitational at UW-Parkside and the boys traveled to Chicago to run in the Loyola Academy Invitational. 

The girls took fifth and were the top non-Division 1 team with 177 points. Abby Pech was 11th, Haley Florsheim 12th and Haley Holan 13th. Angie Sperry was 63rd and Lindsey Morris 80th.

Results for the boys were not available as of Monday.

Girls Tennis – The girls spent three days working through the weather at the Woodland Conference championship which began Tuesday afternoon and concluded Saturday morning.  The No. 1 doubles team of Mary Matoba and Lizzie Tews were upset on the second day of the tournament and that made the competition for the championship a three-way struggle between Shorewood, Wauwatosa West and New Berlin Eisenhower. Eisenhower ended up winning the championship while Shorewood and Wauwautosa West tied for second. The varsity team now moves on to sub-sectionals and sectionals that are the two qualifying tournaments for the state tournament in Madison.

Girls Volleyball – Tuesday night, the girls play their final Woodland Conference home match against Brown Deer.  After a sluggish start, the varsity team got focused and won three straight games, 25-19, 25-16, 25-13. The win improves their conference record to 4-3, good enough for second place in the Blue Division, and 5-3 overall.

Boys Volleyball – The boys had one conference match this week due to the Shorewood Invitational on Saturday.  The match was at Greenfield and the varsity team was in control the entire match, winning 25-9, 25-13, 25-13.  They remain undefeated in Woodland Conference play at 4-0. Ken Plaisted led the team in two categories with 27 assists and 3 blocks, Andrew Mueller had nine kills, Adam Kessenich had 15 digs.

On Saturday, the Greyhounds hosted the Shorewood Invitational and earned second place playing their best volleyball of the season.  They began in pool play defeating both Milwaukee Pius (25-21, 26-24) and Burlington (21-25, 25-19, 18-16). That earned them a match with Appleton North, the ninth-ranked team in the state. They lost in two games to Appleton North and then met Westosha Central in the match for second place.  They won that match 25-17, 25-22.
