Greyhound Update: Cross Country Sends Both Teams to State

Football team bows out of playoffs with 49-6 loss.

Here is this week's roundup of Shorewood High School sports, courtesy of Athletic Director Bill Haury:

Football –  Friday night, the varsity team against a very strong Milwaukee Riverside team, ranked fifth in the state.  The Messwood defense played a good game, but Riverside was able to score on big plays and had a 35-0 lead at halftime.  As the team has done all season, they came out in the second half and played much better, allowing Riverside only 14 points in the third quarter and nothing in the fourth. The Messwood offense keept pounding away and after Taylor Dennis threw a 30-yard pass to Nate Wickstrom that gave them a first down inside the 20-yard line, Taylor threw a 15-yard pass to Alec Grimmer who ran it in for Messwood’s only points.  The 49-6 loss, while disheartening, is still a huge accomplishment for this team and evidence that the program is continuing to make progress.  The experience the juniors, sophomores, and freshmen will take from this play-off experience will be the foundation for the next season.

Cross Country – On Saturday, the at Tendick Park in Saukville.  The girls won the sectional meet by two points over Wisconsin Lutheran.  The boys were second behind Wisconsin Lutheran by seven points.  This qualifies both teams for the state championship meet next Saturday in Wisconsin Rapids.

Boys Volleyball – On Monday, the varsity team defeated Greenfield, 25-11, 25-12, 25-19, remaining undefeated in Woodland Conference play.  Tommy Pech led the team with 13 kills and Tim Perry led with 15 assists.

On Wednesday, the varsity team struggled a bit against Greendale, but kept their undefeated record in the Woodland with a 3-1 win.  They started out well with a 25-22 win in the first game, and gained momentum with a decisive 25-16 win in the second game.  They let down some in the third game, losing 17-25.  This set-up a tough fourth game that was close to the end with a 28-26 final score.  Team leaders were Karl Apfelbach with 12 kills and 5 blocks, Ken Plaisted with 34 assists, and Adam Kessenich with 14 digs.  The team is now 9-0 in Woodland Conference match play.

Girls Volleyball – The varsity team began regional tournament play at home on Tuesday in a first-round match against the No. 8 seed, Saint Joan Antida.  The Jaguars were totally over matched, but the Greyhounds played three solid games winning 25-5, 25-4, 25-15.

Thursday’s second-round match with Whitefish Bay was extremely exciting, yet ultimately disappointing.  After a close first game that Whitefish Bay pulled out, 26-24, Shorewood came out strong in the second game and built a 23-13 lead.  Bay crawled back to tie it at 23, and then the teams traded the advantage until Bay finally won the game 31-29.  While most teams would have simply collapsed after such a tough loss, but the girls dug in and won the third game, 25-23.  In the fourth game, the Greyhounds seemed to have gained the upper hand while winning 25-16, as it seemed Bay couldn’t believe Shorewood was capable of coming back and winning the match.  In the fifth game, Whitefish Bay came out strong and Shorewood seemed to let down just a bit after fighting so hard to tie the match up.  The Greyhounds got behind early, and even though they rallied at the end, the shorter fifth game didn’t allow enough room to comeback from the early deficit and they lost 15-13.  Even though their season ended, the determination they showed in battling back countless times during the long, five-game match, was evidence of the and his staff.  The varsity team ended with a 6-6 overall match record.
