Greyhound Update: Boys, Girls Basketball Swept by Brown Deer

Boys swimming team prepares for sectional meet this Saturday.

Here is a weekly update on Shorewood High School athletics, provided by Athletic Director Bill Haury:

Girls Basketball – The girls hosted Brown Deer on Tuesday night.  Shorewood had won the first meeting of the year, but the Falcons played hard on defense and kept the Greyhounds from getting into any kind of rhythm on offense.  Brown Deer took an early 8-4 lead after the first quarter, and with each successive quarter, added to their lead as they handed the Shorewood girls a 34-24 conference loss.  Margaret O’Brien led the Greyhounds with 10 points, Johnna Odom added 8, Robbie Holland scored 4, and Bella Nassif scored 2 points.  The varsity girls are now 3-10 in conference and 4-12 overall.

Boys Basketball – The boys traveled to Brown Deer on Tuesday for the second game of the conference home-away. The Greyhounds had won the earlier season game which, at the time, was considered an upset, so Brown Deer was going to use its home court advantage to even the season series.

In this game, Brown Deer took the early lead 16-12 after the first quarter, much the same as the early game had been played.  The second quarter also stayed true to the first game, as the Falcons added to their lead to take a margin 27-22 into halftime.  Brown Deer made sure that the third quarter was different this game by not letting down, although Shorewood did outscore the Falcons 20-19 in that quarter, to keep the game close at 46-42.  Brown Deer put the game away with a 19-13 fourth quarter to hand the Greyhounds a 65-55 conference loss.  Donovan Freeman led the team with 21 points, Bobby Kohl and Aaron Bailey each scored 10 points, Patrick Roder scored 9 points, and Kejuan Glosson scored 3.

On Friday night, the Greyhounds hosted Milwaukee School of Languages in a non-conference game.  Shorewood was in command of the game from the start going 21-13 in the first quarter and 23-15 in the second quarter to take a 44-28 lead into halftime.  In the second half, MSL challenged the Greyhounds and cut into the lead with a 22-19 third quarter.  Shorewood put the game away with a 22-16 fourth quarter to come away with an impressive 85-66 victory.  Aaron Bailey led all scorers with 20 points, Kejuan Glosson added 19 points, Patrick Roder scored 18, Donovan Freeman had 11, Bobby Kohl 8, while Michael McKinney, Craig Dampeer, and Charles Organ each scored 3 points.  The boys varsity team is now 5-8 in conference and 9-8 overall.

Boys Swimming – Saturday, Greenfield hosted the Woodland Conference Championship.  In a meet decided by hundredths of seconds, even though the Greyhounds swam some season best times, they wound up a half point behind the Greenfield/Greendale co-op team to take second place in the conference meet.   All three relay teams swam season-best times with the 200 medley relay team of Derek Lock, Henry Sanders, Andrew Clokey and Philip Clausen placing third, the 200 freestyle relay team of Sanders, Clausen, Kirill Korolev and Jay Tomasiewicz placing second and the 400 freestyle relay team of Tomasaiewicz, Korolev, Lock and Suheeth Bayana placing third. Of the 27 individual entries, 21 swam season bests.  Jay Tomasiewicz and Kirill Korolev were conference champions, Jay in 200 individual medley and Kirill in the 500 freestyle.  Jay also placed second in the 100 butterfly and Kirill also placed second in the 200 freestyle.

Henry Sanders placed third in both the 100 breastroke and 200 IM, Andrew Clokey placed sixth in the 200 IM, Philip Clausen placed sixth in the 50 freestyle, Suheeth Bayana placed sixth in the 500 freestyle, Derek Lock placed sixth in the 100 backstroke and seventh in the 100 freestyle, Devon Brusnahan placed seventh in both the 100 backstroke and 200 IM, Charlie Hawks placed seventh in the 100 breastroke and 10th in the 200 IM, Kevin Weisling placed eighth in the 500 freestyle and ninth in the 200 freestyle.

Coach Rob McCabe feels that after seeing how well the boys swam in the conference meet, they will be tapered and prepared for the sectional meet next Saturday at Cudahy.
