Greyhound Roundup: Swimmers Prep for Conference, State Tournaments

Basketball team routs Cudahy to reach 8-7 overall record.

Here is a roundup of athletic events at Shorewood High School, courtesy of athletic director Bill Haury:

Girls Basketball – The girls traveled to Cudahy to play a very strong Packer team. The Greyhounds surprised Cudahy with their tough defense and were close  after the first quarter down only two points, 6-8.  Cudahy stormed back in the second quarter, limiting Shorewood to only 2 points, while they scored 12, and taking a 20-8 lead into halftime.  In the second half, Cudahy maintained the offensive advantage, extending their lead in the third quarter to 40-12.  The young Shorewood team continued to play hard into the fourth quarter, but Cudahy maintained their lead with a 16-9 quarter score, sending Shorewood home with a 56-21 loss.  Ashley Eimers led the team with 6 points, Aisling Moloney, Robbie Holland, and Johnna Odom each scored 4 points, while Abby Pech added 3 points.  The varsity girls are now 3-9 in Woodland Conference play and 4-11 overall.

Boys Basketball – The boys hosted Cudahy on Friday night, and all three levels came away with a victory.  Both the freshman & JV teams won by a 30-point margin and the varsity almost did the same in their 73-54 victory.  A 19-6 first quarter put the Greyhounds ahead early in the game, but Cudahy came back with a 21-11 second quarter, that left a three-point Shorewood lead at halftime.  Coach Jones and his staff made some adjustments during halftime and the Greyhounds extended their lead with a 22-11 third quarter. The starters got a rest in the fourth quarter, but the second-team players continued the offensive advantage with a 21-16 final quarter margin.

Aaron Bailey led all scorers with 29 points, Patrick Roder moved up from JV to add 16 points, Kejuan Glosson & Donovan Freeman each scored 8 points, Bobby Kohl had 6, Charles Organ had 4, and Zach George scored 2 points.  The varsity boys are now 5–7 in conference play and 8-7 overall.

Boys Swimming – The boys swam quite well after nearly a two-week break from competition and turned in some fantastic swims in events they don’t swim on a regular basis.  Some real surprises were Kirill Korolev’s versatility in the 200 IM (first) and 100 breastroke (second), Devon Brusnahan’s first in the 100 butterfly and third in the 200 freestyle, and Charlie Hawks’ sub-6:00 500 freestyle.

Other impressive performances were Jay Tomasiewicz taking first in both the 200 freestyle & 100 breastroke, Henry Sanders’ first in the 100 freestyle and second in the 50 freestyle. Kevin Weisling taking second in the 100 butterfly and third in the 100 backstroke, Philip Clausen’s second in the 100 backstroke and third in the 200 IM, Suhith Bayana’s second in the 100 freestyle, and Carlo DeSando’s third in both the 100 breastroke and 50 freestyle. Two relays took first, the 200 freestyle team of Korolev, Tomasiewicz, Gabe Rono, and Derek Lock, and the 400 freestyle relay team of Korolev, Sanders, Clausen, & Tomasiewicz.  The team finishes their dual matches 3-0-1 in conference, and 4-0-1 overall.  They now head into the tournament portion of their schedule.

On Saturday, the team traveled north to Plymouth for the Small School State invitational meet.  The meet was a struggle for many of the boys as they were tired , sick with a cold, or starting a rest phase of their training..  The bright spots in the meet were the 200 IM where Jay Tomasiewicz took second and Henry Sanders and Devon Brusnahan swimming season best times. Tomasiewicz also took second in the 100 butterfly.  Andrew Clokey broke the 1-minute barrier in the 100 butterfly with a 59.95.  Overall, the team finished eighth out of 18 teams, but had hoped to finish higher.
