Greyhound Roundup: Gymnasts Earn Season-High Score

Boys and girls basketball teams defeat St. Francis.

Here is a roundup of sports action from Shorewood High School last week, courtesy of Athletic Director Bill Haury:

Gymnastics– The girls team had a great meet on Wednesday at Whitefish Bay.  The .  Tyiana Lizana scored an 8.5 and took second on the vault.  Asia Cruz placed third on bars (7.4) and second on beam (8.3).  Other gymnasts contributing to the team’s success were Erin Valusek, Lily Blind, Yve Bennett, Logan Johnson, Carolyn Mahns and Anna Noble-Machery.

Girls Basketball – The girls were back in action again Friday night hosting the Mariners from Saint Francis.  It was a close game through the first half with the Greyhounds gaining a slight edge each quarter and taking an 18-15 lead into halftime.  They came out strong in the third quarter and extended their lead to 30-21 on their way to a 40-32 victory, their second in a row and both in conference play.  Margaret O’Brien continued to have the hot hand leading all scorers with 21 points.  Ashley Eimers and Brianna McKinney each scored 5 points, Robbie Holland added 4 points, Grace Hayes and Johnna Odom each scored 2 points, and Abby Pech scored 1 point.  The varsity girls are now 2-5 in conference play and 2-7 overall.

Boys Basketball – The boy’s team were back in action Tuesday night, hosting a non-conference game with West Allis Hale of the Greater Metro Conference.  The Huskies got on the board first, but their two-point lead was short lived as the Greyhounds scored the next six points to take a lead they never relinquished the remainder of the game on their way to a 60-45 win.  They outscored Hale in each of the four quarters and are now 3-0 in non-conference games, and 5-4 overall, the first time over .500 in 15 years!  Deion Jackson-Body led all scorers with 21 points, Aaron Bailey added 16, Kejuan Glosson and Donovan Freeman each scored 9 points, and Carmen Purvis scored 7.

On Friday night the boys traveled to Saint Francis and swept the Mariners winning at all three levels, freshman, JV and varsity.  In the varsity game, the Greyhounds jumped out to an early lead 22-4 and extended that lead to 40-15 at halftime.  This allowed many of the bench players to get into the game during the second half on the way to a 66-49 victory.  Donovan Freeman led all scorers with 18 points, Deion Jackson-Body added 14 points, Aaron Bailey had 10, Bobby Kohl had 7, Kejuan Glosson, Jurell James, and Carmen Purvis each had 4 points, Craig Dampeer scored 3 points, and Zach George and Charles Organ each scored 1 point.  The varsity team is now 3-4 in the Woodland Conference and 6-4 overall.

Boys Swimming – The team won its second Woodland Conference dual and third dual overall, outscoring South Milwaukee, 132-49.  The team won every event of the meet.  The 200 medley relay team was Kirill Korolev, Devon Brusnahan, Kevin Weisling, and Henry Sanders.  Derek Lock won the 200 freestyle and took second in the 500 freestyle. Sanders won the 200 individual medley and the 100 freestyle. Philip Clausen won the 50 freestyle and took second in 100 freestyle. Jay Tomasiewicz won the 500 freestyle and the 100 breastroke. The 200 freestyle relay team was Andrew Clokey, Clausen, Charlie Hawks, and Tomasiewicz. Hawks also took second in the 50 freestyle and 100 breastroke. Korolev won the 100 backstroke and Weisling took second. Korolev also won the 100 butterfly while Weisling took second and Suhith Bayana took third. The 400 freestyle relay team was Clokey, Sanders, Gabe Rono, and Philip Clausen.  It was a very dominating performance by the boys team. 

On Saturday, the boys competed in the Bulldog Invitational at Cedarburg.  They tied for second with Racine Case, scoring 310 points. Tomasiewicz led the team with a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly and a third in the 100 backstroke.  Korolev took fourth in the 500 freestyle and fifth in the 200 freestyle. Sanders took fifth in the 100 breastroke and ninth in the 50 freestyle. Lock took fifth in the 100 backstroke and sixth in the 200 individual medley. Brusnahan took sixth in the 100 backstroke and 10th in the 200 individual medley.  The 200 medley relay team of Lock, Sanders, Clausen and Rono took fifth, as did the 200 freestyle relay team of Tomasiewicz, Sanders, Clausen, and Korolev.
