Buzz Cuts for Cancer

Shorewood district students and teachers are now sporting a hairstyle as they received a Buzz Cut to raise funds for the MACC Fund.

Haircuts were available in one style Thursday — short.

Some district students and teachers are now sporting a new look as they packed the Shorewood High School Arena for the seventh annual Buzz Cuts for Cancer.

Exchanging $15 for a buzz cut and pledging donations, students and teachers were given haircuts by professional hairstylists volunteering their time to provide the cuts.

Funds raised went to benefit the MACC Fund, an national organization supporting research into the effective treatment and cure of childhood cancer and blood disorders. Cancer is the leading disease-related cause of death in children after the newborn period.

Additional funds are raised by selling student designed T-shirts for the event.

Buzz Cuts for Cancer was started by two members of the high school Student Council in 2005, as a fun and unique way to support the MACC Fund.

Avery Anapol said the event was passed down to her and junior Lilly Blind from the high school senior who ran it last year.

"It was never something I never really thought about doing... but later found it's a great cause and something unique," Anapol said.

Anapol received a buzz cut Thursday and said while it wasn't too surprising because she did it last year, it was still scary.

"It's fun and it's worth it," Anapol said.

In addition, some students with longer hair received a haircut and donated it to Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that collects hair and provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children, suffering from long-term medical hair loss.
