Continuing Our Fight

I am running for re-election in the newly-drawn 10th Assembly District. I appreciate the opportunity Shorewood Patch has provided for me to blog as a "Local Voice", and be sure to vote on August 14!

Gov. Walker and his extreme right-wing allies have deeply divided our state through extreme and unprecedented attacks on our working families. They have chose to pursue a “divide-and-conquer” agenda that places corporate tax loopholes, special interest giveaways, and extreme social issues before addressing the everyday issues facing our communities. What followed was an unprecedented grassroots movement throughout Milwaukee and across the state to hold them accountable for their actions.

Last summer, I made the decision to run against one of Gov. Walker’s closest and most extreme allies – Republican State Senator Alberta Darling. While our grassroots efforts ultimately were not able to compete with the massive spending behind her or Gov. Walker’s campaigns, I definitely made an impression on Wisconsin Republicans. Through redistricting, they made a clear effort to eliminate me and Milwaukee's voice from the legislature by severely fracturing communities of interest in the Milwaukee area and redrawing the 22nd District a great distance from the communities I have had the honor to represent.

Using a secretive, divisive, and highly partisan redistricting plan, Gov. Walker and his accomplices thought that they wouldn’t have to worry about me anymore. But they were wrong – by redistricting the base of my grassroots support and large chunk of my current district into the newly-drawn 10th Assembly District, they have given me the opportunity to continue representing Shorewood and the Milwaukee communities that I have had the honor to represent and fight for over the past several years.

Because of redistricting, I have a primary election on August 14 and am the sole incumbent running for re-election to the newly-drawn 10th Assembly District.  As the Assistant Assembly Democratic Leader and Chair of the Milwaukee Democratic Legislative Caucus, I am a proven leader for Milwaukee’s communities and would be honored and privileged to continue representing Milwaukee’s communities and fighting for our shared values and priorities.

As I continue to knock on doors throughout our communities, it is clear that people want leaders who will come together to find solutions for the struggles and complex issues that we are facing. They want their representatives to create family-sustaining jobs, invest in quality public education, and increase access to affordable healthcare – not cave to extreme forces, slash funding from critical programs, or give billions in tax breaks to huge corporations and special interests. Most importantly, they want their leaders to stand up to the unprecedented attacks on our shared values and fight back against the most divisive agenda our community has ever faced. I am excited to continue our fight and representing Milwaukee’s communities and ask for your support on August 14.
