What to Know for Tuesday's Democratic Primary

Voters will see some changes at the polls as the recently enacted voter identification law is partially implemented.

Shorewood residents will have their opportunity to cast their votes for either Rep. Sandy Pasch (D-Whitefish Bay) or Gladys Huber, .

The winner of Tuesday's primary will challenge for Sen. Alberta Darling's (R-River Hills) 8th District Senate seat, four weeks later on Aug. 9.

When you go to the polls on Tuesday, expect to see a few changes in procedures, as will be partially implemented.

Shorewood Village Clerk Sherry Grant said voters will be asked to sign a poll book. Poll workers use a poll book to check off registered voters as they walk in, and usually putting their voter number next to their name. On Tuesday, voters will be asked to sign the book, next to their name.

Grant said she can't anticipate voter turnout for Tuesday, but has received more than 700 absentee ballots.

Here are primary changes will be in effect Tuesday:

  • Voters will be asked, but are not required to provide a photo ID. However, beginning in 2012 a voter must provide ID in order to vote.
  • Any voter not able to provide a photo ID in 2011 will be given a handout that has been created by the Government Accountability Board.
  • Voters must sign the poll list when voting at a polling location on Election Day before they can receive a ballot.
  • The residency requirement has changed from 10 days prior to Election Day to 28 consecutive days prior to Election Day.
  • A voter can no longer use a corroborating witness when registering to vote.
  • University and college students can establish residency for registration by using the combination of a college ID with a photo and a fee payment receipt dated no earlier than nine months before the election.

Tuesday will serve as a trial run for poll workers implementing the new changes before full implementation in 2012.

The polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
