What's Up This Week in Shorewood? Local School, Village Officials Talk Teacher Retirements, Sewers

Here's a look at what's coming up this week in Shorewood. If we're missing something, you can add it to the calendar.

School officials discuss Chapter 220 and retirement requests — The School Board will meet Tuesday night for a regular meeting and discuss adding 14 Chapter 220 seats to the district for the 2012-2013 school year.

Chapter 220, the Voluntary Student Transfer Program, aims to racially integrate schools. Minority students including African Americans, Asians, Hispanic and Native Americans may apply to attend school in Shorewood. Shorewood currently has 146 Chapter 220 seats, K4-12.

The proposed seats are in anticipation of 12 Shorewood High School seniors graduating in June.

The board will also consider the retirement requests of six district teachers, two custodian/maintenance employees and two secretaries. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. in the Library, 1701 E. Capitol Dr.

Village officials talk sewers — The Village Board will meet for a special sewer meeting at 6:30 Monday night.

With officials ready to move forward with a aimed at fixing Shorewood’s faulty system after residents experienced severe basement backups and street flooding, trustees will discuss the timing of different projects around the village, how they plan to finance the plan, establishing a stormwater utility  and bidding out for project work. Officials meet at , 3930 N. Murray Ave.

Preps sports — Coming off Friday night the 2-2 (1-2) Shorewood boys basketball team are slated for two games this week — Tuesday at home against Whitnall and Friday at South Milwaukee. The winless girls basketball team play the same two teams on the same nights, however, they play at Whitnall and host South Milwaukee. Home games are played at Shorewood High School, 1701 E. Capitol Dr., and all games start at 7:30 p.m.

The varsity boys swimming team hosts a meet 6 p.m. on Wednesday against New Berlin. The meet is held at Shorewood High School.

The Whitefish Bay-Shorewood-Nicolet combined hockey team hosts a game Wednesday night at 7 p.m. against Greendale. The Storm play at the Kern Center in downtown Milwaukee, 1245 N. Broadway St.

Free concert at the American Legion post — at Shorewood’s American Legion Post, 4121 N. Wilson Dr., Saturday at 7:30 p.m. If you’re a Frank Sinatra or Michael Buble fan, you’ll enjoy listening to the sounds of the Brew City Big Band, the group says.
