Village to Examine Local Application of New Concealed Weapons Law

Village officials will start tweaking village code to mirror new state law and decide whether to ban weapons in village-owned facilities.

Shorewood's Police and Fire Commission will discuss the village's approach to the state's new concealed carry legislation β€” including whether to ban firearms from municipal buildings β€” at Tuesday's meeting.

The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m., ahead of the 7:30 p.m. Village Board meeting.

The new legislation, recently signed into law by Gov. Scott Walker, allows citizens to possess concealed firearms, Tasers and other weapons as of Nov. 1. Local officials will have to decide whether to ban firearms on village property such as and the .

Under the new law, municipalities cannot restrict residents from carrying weapons in public parks. School grounds are already protected zones under state statute.

Village Manager Chris Swartz said the prospect of a ban would be thoroughly vetted in several village committees before the Village Board moves to approve an ordinance.

The committee is also slated to start discussing a new ordinance acknowledging the change in state law and potential changes to village employment policies to make them consistent with the new state law, according to the published agenda.
