Village President Among Three Village Board, One School Board Seats on April Ballot

Thursday marks the beginning of the election cycle, with residents able to file candidacy papers.

Village President Guy Johnson's seat, along with two other Village Board seats, one School Board seat β€” held by Board President Paul Zovic β€” and Shorewood’s municipal court judge seat will be on the ballot this spring.

The seats of trustees Jeff Hanewall and Thad Nation, who was appointed to fill former Trustee will be on the ballot. Both couldn't be reached for comment Thursday on whether they will seek another term. Johnson nor Zovic also could not be reached for comment.

Municipal Court Judge Donal Demet's seat also is up this spring.

Thursday was the first day that interested parties could begin filing nomination papers. The paperwork must be filed by 5 p.m. Jan. 3 to get on the ballot. Papers are available at , 3930 N. Murray Ave., and in the superintendent's office, 1701 E. Capitol Dr.

The general election is April 3, and if a primary is needed, it will take place on Feb. 21.

Incumbents who choose not to run must announce that decision by filing a declaration of non-candidacy by Dec. 27. In Shorewood, candidates aren't required to gather signatures, like many other municipalities do.

Both the School Board and trustee posts are three-year terms with a $1,000 annual salary. As School Board president, elected to the seat by other board members, Zovic earns $1,300. The village president seat is a three-year term and earns $1,300 annually. Shorewood's municipal judge serves a three-year term with a $5,000 annual salary.
