Village Board Calls for Changes in Budget Repair Bill

Trustees urge removal of sections of bill that take away public employees' collective bargaining rights.

Following similar actions from the School Board, the village president and a group of students, the Village Board Friday formally asked for changes to be made in Gov. Scott Walker's controversial budget repair bill.

A resolution, unanimously approved by the Village Board in a special meeting Friday, urges the governor and state Legislature to eliminate the parts of the bill that would modify collective bargaining rights and to find a compromise that would still balance the budget.

"The budget repair bill… excessively restricts the collective bargaining process between local governmental bodies and their employees and it disregards the valuable contributions public sector unions have made and continue to make to provide cost effective local and state services,” the resolution says.

Trustee Michael Maher said the bill really hits to the core of the village employees' rights.

“We are elected here to take care of the village’s business, and there is enough in the bill that is disruptive to out relationship with our employees,” Maher said.
