As the year comes to a close, we all tend to look back at what exactly we've accomplished over the past 365 days.

During the month of July, the temperature and politics heated up in Shorewood. As the recall campaign to unseat Sen. Alberta Darling was in full swing, the heat index reached 100 degrees.

The heat index reached 100 degrees in Shorewood, creating a dangerous weather event during the second week of the month. Officials advised people to stay indoors or head to a local pool to stay cool.

Pasch won Shorewood over "fake" Democrat challenger Gladys Huber with an overwhelming 85 percent of the vote in a recall primary race. She also easily won the 8th District and advanced to the general recall election, where she challenged Darling.

Dozens of people gathered to protest Darling outside her campaign office on Silver Spring Drive in Glendale. The event was organized to protest Darling's support of U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan's budget plan, which calls for an overhaul of Medicare. She expressed her support for Ryan's plan at a GOP fundraiser in June.

The Shorewood Foundation issued $45,000 in grants to SHS Drama, Friends of Atwater Beach and Shorewood Reads. The grants left the committee with a financial cushion of about $7,000, concerning foundation officials.

Shorewood's annual Fourth of July celebration was a hit with the community, which enjoyed an afternoon parade and then music and free ice cream in River Park. The celebration was highlighted by a spectacular fireworks show during the evening.
