Shorewood Snapshot: School Annual Meeting; Village Budget Talks; Barktoberfest

Here's a look at what's coming up this week in Shorewood. If we're missing something, please add it to the calendar.

School district annual meeting — The Shorewood School Board and community members will convene Monday for the district's annual meeting. 

School officials will hold a budget hearing and a public vote on the 2012 tax levy, the amount the district will collect from village property owners through property taxes for funding purposes, among other agenda items.

The meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. in the Shorewood High School Library, 1701 E. Capitol Dr., will follow a regular School Board meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Village budget workshops — Shorewood officials will begin budget talks Monday with an overview of the proposed financial plan. Workshops focusing on different village departments will begin Thursday with the library and village marketing budget.

Both the meetings start at 6:30 p.m. at Village Hall, 3930 N. Murray Ave.

Other government meetings at Village Hall this week include a Plan Commission meeting on Tuesday night at 5:30, and the Design Review Board on Thursday night at 5.

Barktoberfest — The Estabrook Park Beer Garden will play host to a free, dog-friendly event slated for Saturday from 1 to 6 p.m.

Enjoy an exhibitor fair, dog games, contests and demonstrations. The Barktoberfest stage will have great live music and "yappy" hour at the Beer Garden.

Learn about green solutions for dogs, people and the planet. The event is sponsored in part by the Shorewood Waters Project.

Preps sports — The Messmer/Shorewood football team will try to bounce back after fielding its first loss of the season, when it matches up against South Milwaukee for an away game Friday at 7 p.m.

Boys soccer will hit the field this week for matches against Greenfield Monday at 4:30 p.m. at home and 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Pius.

The girls tennis team will participate in a conference tournament on Tuesday at 4 p.m. and Wednesday morning at 8, at Greendale/Greenfield High Schools.

The girls volleyball team has an away game against Brown Deer at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday and the boys volleyball team will host Pius 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The girls swimming team will host a meet on 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

All home games are played at Shorewood High School, 1701 E. Capitol Dr.
