Shorewood Snapshot: National Night Out; Fireworks at Atwater Beach Party

— In addition a rescheduled show of Shorewood's Fourth of July firework, the beach party on Saturday, organized by local community group Friends of Atwater Beach, will offer $6 plates of barbecue, live music from local bands Dukster, Fred Bliffert & the Atwater Beach Blues Band, and Lil' Debbie and the Tone Gods and beer on tap.

The party kicks off at 3 p.m. at , intersection of East Capitol Drive and North Lake Drive.

— In lieu of a block party, this year the is opening will open its doors to the public at 3936 N. Murray Ave. for an open house from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, as part of National Night Out.

The department will provide information about home security, identifying suspicious activity and tips to help residents stay safe while walking and shopping in the village.

Open house participants can even have their photo taken in a jail cell, police squad or on a police bicycle.

Then from 7 to 10 p.m., police are asking all residents to flip on their porch lights to show a united front against crime.

Over 15,000 communities across America and Canada will be participating in National Night Out over the summer months, in an effort to increase neighborhood spirit and generate community support for anti-crime programs.

Southern Tradition blends together elements of rockabilly, southern rock, outlaw/classic country and today's country. The group will bring its music to , 3565 N. Morris Blvd., as the seventh act in the village's summer-long concert series. The concert starts at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

The series includes local bands every Wednesday until Aug. 29 — from jazz to blues, Irish to country, and every musical style in-between.

Assorted food and beverages will be sold; no carry-in alcohol is allowed.

Government, school meetings — The village's Design Review Board meets on Thursday at 5 p.m. at , 3930 N. Murray Ave.

Additionally, the 's Policy Committee meets Wednesday at 1:15 p.m. at the , 1701 E. Capitol Dr.
