Shorewood Snapshot: Meet the Superintendent Candidates; Flea Market

A look at this week's local events and news.

Here's a look at what's coming up this week in Shorewood. If we're missing something, please add it to the calendar.

Meet the candidates — School officials have whittled a pool of candidates for Shorewood's new superintendent to two: current Lake Bluff Elementary School Principal Kirk Juffer and superintendent of the Kohler Public School District in Kohler, WI Martin Lexmond.

The district has lined up community meetings on Tuesday and Thursday where teachers and citizens can meet Juffer and Lexmond.

On each day, four meetings will be held with residents and staff members welcome to attend, in most instances.

The meeting schedule for both days is as follows:

  • 8:45 to 9:30 a.m. at , 3830 N. Morris Blvd., Room 122
  • 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. at the southwest entrance of 's Early Education Center, 2100 E. Capitol Drive
  • 2 to 2:45 p.m. at , 1600 E. Lake Bluff blvd., Room 200
  • 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. at Shorewood Intermediate School Commons, 3830 N. Morris Blvd. (a session for teachers and educational professionals in the community)

Village meetings — Officials will discuss a potential stormwater utility fund to pay for some sewer upgrades and update its sewer plan at a meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the , 3920 N. Murray, lower level of the .

The village's Police Commission will discuss requirements and the process for selecting a new lieutenant and sergeant within the , after , leaving his post vacant.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the Shorewood Police Department conference room, 3936 N. Murray Ave.

— Join Shorewood High School drama students for this collaboration of Elton John and Time Rice. A contemporary, musical take on the grand classic tale of the timeless love — here between an enslaved Nubian princess and an Egyptian soldier. As their forbidden love blossoms, the young couple is forced to face death or part ways forever.

The show runs Thursday through Saturday. All shows start at 7:30 p.m. in the Shorewood High School arena, 1701 E. Capitol Dr.

— Shorewood's annual community flea market is set for Saturday and promises an array of unique items.

The market will feature toys, household items, musical instruments, books, CDs and collectibles. Baked goods and lunches will also be available for purchase. This is Shorewood's eighth market.

It runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Shorewood Village Center, in the lower level of the Shorewood Library, 3920 N. Murray Avenue.

— Looking for a new bicycle just in time for the summer? You may be in luck. The Shorewood Police Department’s annual bike sale is right around the corner on Saturday.

Police will have more than 30 used bicycles up for sale this year, all of which are lost and found or confiscated items. The sale starts at 9 a.m. in the back of the police station, 3936 N. Murray Ave. Get there early as the first 10 people get first dibs.

Sgt. Charles Vanderschaaf runs the sale and admits some of the bikes need some work, but most require just minor fixes. Bicycle prices typically range from $5 to $50, though Vanderschaaf said he has yet to price the bikes. He said most of what's for sale this year isn’t big enough for an adult, but rather built for children and teenagers.

New this year, Vanderschaaf said there are two lawnmowers and a leaf blower available.

What the department doesn’t sale gets thrown into a truck and donated to Goodwill.

This is the department's 30th sale. Vanderschaaf said the sale has yielded the department more than $700 each of the past two years.

Money raised will go toward funding for bike safety courses, bicycle equipment and possibly the launch of a children's bicycle rodeo.

The workshop takes place at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the Village Center, 3920 N. Murray Ave.

Preps sports — The Shorewood High School softball team has three games scheduled this week including away games against Wauwatosa West on Tuesday at 6:30 pm. and Pewaukee on Wednesday at 4:15 p.m. and a home against Cudahy on Thursday at 4:15 p.m. Shorewood is 2-12 (2-9) this season.

Shorewood's girls soccer team has two home games including matches against Greendale on Tuesday and Pewaukee on Thursday. Both games start at 6:30 p.m. The team is 7-3-1 (6-2-1) on the season.

The high school boys tennis team has two meets this week including a match on Wednesday at 4 p.m. and a 8:30 a.m. match on Thursday. Both games are at Greendale/Greenfield High Schools.

The Shorewood golf team will participate in two meets this week including a conference meet at Broadlands Golf Course on Monday at a time to be determined later and a meet at Washington County Golf Club Wednesday at 8:30 a.m.

And, the boys and girls track teams will participate in meets on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Greendale High School.

All home games are played at , 1701 E. Capitol Dr.
