Shorewood Signs Off on Summer Lifeguard Service at Atwater Beach

Lifeguards will staff the beach from June 16 to Aug. 18, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week, under an agreement with Milwaukee County.

After being closed last summer for construction, will be available this season to beach-goers with lifeguards on duty.

In an agreement with Milwaukee County, the beach will be staffed with lifeguard service from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days a week. A tentative start and end date of June 16 to Aug. 18 was set by village officials on Monday.

Shorewood is staffing the beach for about $10,000. The original cost was $16,000, but the village had about $6,000 left over from last year when the beach was .

Trustees and members of a local citizens group, Friends of Atwater Beach, said expanding lifeguard service later into August might be something to look at.

But, Village Manager Chris Swartz said it’s all a matter of whether lifeguards are available from Milwaukee that late in the season, with most guards being college students who typically leave in late August to prepare for the start of school.
