track coach Dominic Newman said he wanted to start a dialogue with local police — and it looks like he is getting his wish. Newman said Shorewood Police Chief David Banaszynski sent him an e-mail late last week requesting a private meeting with him and Whitefish Bay Police Chief Robert Jacobs to  “discuss the incident and come to a mutual understanding.”

Poll workers will be required to ask voters for photo identification during this summer's state Senate recall elections — but poll workers can't stop residents from casting their ballots, at least for now. The Government Accountability Board, the state agency that oversees elections, issued a reminder this week regarding the recently enacted voter ID law. While the requirement that all voters produce a photo ID does not go into effect until the 2012 spring primary, the new law requires that voters be asked for the information beginning with the recall elections.

After months of the debate, the Shorewood School Board has approved a preliminary $21.9 million budget for next year that doesn't include any new administrative positions. Although the 2011-12 budget still could be modified before it gets final approval in October, overall expenditures are down about $1.8 from last year — a 7.7 percent decrease. After starting the budget process of with a $1.95 million deficit, the district is projecting a surplus of $1,295.

Democratic “placeholder” candidates will no longer run in this summer’s state Senate recall elections, the Wisconsin Democratic Party announced Friday. The party said it will not file the final paperwork needed to be put placeholders on ballot in the six recall elections targeting Republican senators, including state Sen. Alberta Darling (R-River Hills).

Shorewood police are investigating the alleged sexual assault of a Shorewood woman by a taxi cab driver Sunday morning.

A former spokesperson for former Gov. Jim Doyle's administration was appointed to the Shorewood Village Board Monday after receiving a majority vote from trustees. Thad Nation, 4426 N. Farwell Ave., founder of the public relations firm, Nation Consulting, received the four out of six votes necessary for the appointment and will be sworn in at a July 11 board meeting.

The Shorewood School Board voted 3-2 on Tuesday against approving the special tax district aimed to help fund a . Based on that vote, Business Manager Mark Boehlke will now have to vote "no" on behalf of the School Board when the Joint Review Board considers whether to add spending authority for tax district No. 1 and create tax district No. 4. That meeting is June 23.

The Mandel Group jumped through another hoop Tuesday in its efforts to advance development plans for the two parking lots near Sendik’s. The village’s Plan Commission voted unanimously to create a Planned Development District encompassing the development, giving it unique zoning rules to accommodate the project.
