Shorewood Patch Week in Review

In case you missed it, here are some of last week's top headlines.

The site at 1111 E. Capitol Dr. soon will be a nearly clean slate for prospective developers, as Shorewood plans to raze the building on the lot by June. The Village Board Monday approved a $60,100 contract with Advanced Restoration to demolish the former Riverbrook Restaurant, a boarded-up and abandoned building that greets drivers as they enter Shorewood on its western border.

Superintendent Blane McCann will remain in Shorewood and not take a school chief position in Columbus, OH after withdrawing his name from consideration, his secretary confirmed Friday., a suburban school district outside of metro Columbus, but secretary Kim Grady said Friday he withdrew his name from consideration sometime last week.

Haircuts were available in one style Thursday — short. Some district students and teachers are now sporting a new look as they packed the Shorewood High School Arena for the seventh annual Buzz Cuts for Cancer.

Hi there! Happy Monday! I'm Sara but you probably know me best from my weekly column,  on Shorewood Patch. It was in one of those  where I told you all about my passion for pinching pennies. In another, I explained how I was  and sending my deals on staples such as toothpaste and deodorant to the troops in Afghanistan. But what you may not know is that I wrangle all those crazy couponing deals, tips and tricks and let 'em loose on my website, Sarandipity Saves.

Even with prospective developments spouting up around Shorewood's business district, the village still has a long list of possible sites it has targeted for redevelopment. The village’s Community Development Authority has released a list of its top 10 sites where redevelopment could occur.

Somehow, thinking seriously about my 20th college reunion has conjured up some memories I find uncomfortable, and has added pounds and years. I wasn’t going to go.

Construction will start June 1 and last all summer on North Downer Avenue as the village contracts out work for road repairs and starts work on fixing its sewer system as part of its comprehensive sewer plan. Downer Avenue residents should have received a letter informing them of the construction, and some residents might not have access to their driveways during portions of the construction.

The prospect of consolidating the with the North Shore Health Department could be a done deal by June. The Shorewood Village Board approved the concept of consolidating with the North Shore Health Department on Monday and village staff will now work on an agreement with six other North Shore communities.

Bicyclists and runners enjoyed Shorewood's new Oak Leaf Trail bridge for the first time Thursday since it was replaced in late November. The bridge, that allows bicyclists to venture over East Capitol Drive, was originally planned for completion in mid-November but was pushed back due to torrential rainfall in July and delays on the arrival of construction material.
