Shorewood Schools Supt. Blane McCann is one of six finalists for a superintendent's position in Columbus, OH, he confirmed Wednesday. McCann pursued the opportunity to be closer to family, he said. “I haven’t made any decisions, but felt this was an opportunity I needed to explore,” McCann said.

A band of hundreds will take to their gardens May 28, for the "Victory Garden Blitz," encouraging local communities to look beyond the produce aisle and into their own yards. Urban gardening means much more than just growing your own food for Gretchen Mead, director of The Victory Garden Initiative and Shorewood resident, it's about sustainability and being self-sufficient.

Shorewood School Board members weighed in Tuesday on Superintendent Blane McCann's proposed budget for next year, opposing proposed cuts to music programs and spending $110,000 on wireless Internet service throughout the district. In their review of the budget recommendations, some board members took issue with the proposed elimination of music directorships, and plans to add Wi-Fi and additional administrative positions. The board's concerns came one week after about 60 parents and residents

Construction crews have started work on repairing damaged decorative brick crosswalks along East Capitol Drive, a state spokesperson said Wednesday. Brick installed in several crosswalks as part of the massive Capitol Drive reconstruction project in Shorewood — wrapped just a few months ago — have fallen apart and been patched with asphalt.

Around this same time last year, one classroom of Atwater Elementary kindergarten students were working on writing stories and publishing their tales into books. This year, their class missed an important piece.

After five years on the Village Board, Trustee Margaret Hickey had to step down this month after she decided to purchase a home outside of Shorewood. “It was one of the more difficult decisions me and my husband have had to make,” she said. “We have so many great friends and memories in Shorewood.”

The Miss Shorewood Drag Beauty Pageant featured male Student Council members from the high school, dressed in ball gowns and heels, strutting their way across the high school auditorium stage to raise money. After three winners were selected, a live auction ensued, with audience members yelling and applauding for their favorite.

Shorewood anticipates providing $8.7 million to a Milwaukee developer to help finance a $32 million, six-story apartment and retail development proposed for North Oakland Avenue.

Patch got a chance to catch up with the Easter Bunny as he made an appearance at the Shorewood Men's Club Easter egg hunt Saturday in Hubbard Park. Apparently, the Easter Bunny has been coming to this Easter egg hunt for the past 14 years and derives his inspiration from “the kids'" according to Mr. Bunny.
