Shorewood Approves $1 Million Parking Addition for Oakland Avenue Development

Village officials say the additional parking is needed to handle parking traffic when its at its busiest.

Village officials on Thursday approved an additional deck to the proposed parking structure behind at a cost of $1 million.

The deck adds 55 parking spots to the $32 million, six-story retail and apartment project proposed by the Mandel Group. Community Development Authority officials say they are needed to handle parking demand during peak traffic hours.

which noted during these peak traffic hours, the 149 parking spaces planned for the project wouldn’t be enough, but adding a deck to reach 204 spots would suffice. The parking study doesn’t include the 84 street parking spots on the block.

Shorewood plans to pay for the $1 million addition through $700,000 in revenue from the its special tax district No. 1 and $300,000 through parking utilities. Parking utilities are funds collected from fees at village-owned lots. Officials said they already had that money allocated for parking improvements in the district.
