The Democratic presidential ticket of Barack Obama and Joe Biden took the Shorewood vote Tuesday garnering 71 percent.
According to unofficial results from village clerk's office, Republicans Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan garnered 2,372 or 26 percent while Democrats Obama and Biden, who won re-election and took the state as well, received 6,295.
The village once again leaned Democratic, as it voted 74 percent for Obama and Biden during the 2008 presidential election against Republicans John McCain and Sarah Palin.
In a hotly contested race for the state's open U.S. Senate seat, Democratic candidate U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin grabbed 70 percent of the vote in the village with 6,041 ballots cast in her favor, whereas Republican candidate and former Gov. Tommy Thompson received 2,458 or 28 percent. Baldwin defeated Thompson statewide to win election to the U.S. Senate.
Democrat incumbent Gwen Moore, who defeated Republican challenger Dan Sebring for a third time to win re-election to the 4th Congressional District, received 5,420 votes or 68 percent to Sebring's 2,273 or 28 percent in Shorewood.
And, Lena Taylor, the Democratic incumbent in the 4th state Senate District race, garnered 5,627 votes or 75 percent while her challenger, independent David King, grabbed 1,821 votes for 24 percent of the vote.
Voters turnout in droves to cast their ballot in Shorewood — 85 percent on Tuesday.
The election inspector at Lake Bluff Elementary School, Mary Jo McDonald, estimated that voter turnout was higher than the last presidential election.
At about 4:30 p.m., there were approximately 1,230 votes. The peak voting time was between 7 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. — the case at other Shorewood polling location — at which time the lines were out the door.
Even with the high turnout, Election Day went smoothly and poll workers didn't see any significant issues.
Here's the breakdown on how Shorewood voted Tuesday. Results are not official until they are canvassed.
