Historic Milwaukee's 'Spaces & Traces' Tours Shorewood this Spring

The tour, organized by Historic Milwaukee, of over a dozen historically significant Shorewood sites takes place May 18 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will be only the second time the tour has ventured outside of the city limits in 32 years.

The Spaces & Traces neighborhood tour is making a stop in Shorewood this spring, calling attention to the village's unique history as a Milwaukee suburb.

Over 32 years, it will be only the second time the tour has ventured outside the city limits. Historic Milwaukee, the organizers of the tour, partner with homeowners and neighbors to showcase architecturally and historically significant properties throughout Milwaukee County.

"Over the years, tour attendees have been educated about the 'historical traces' of areas as varied as the Third Ward, Yankee Hill, Lincoln Avenue, Bay View, Rufus King, Newberry Blvd, Sherman Park, and Story Hill as well as the areas along the rivers in downtown, Brady Street, Riverwest, and Walker’s Point," the organization's website reads

The tour of over a dozen Shorewood sites takes place May 18 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year, the organization will team up with the Shorewood Historical Society in research for the tour.

The tour started in the spring of 1981, when Historic Walker’s Point, Inc. hosted its first day-long tour entitled Loft Spaces and Historic Traces, featuring interiors as well as exteriors of several buildings in the downtown area. Since, hundreds of volunteers have helped thousands of tour goers become more familiar with the unique characteristics of dozens of historic areas in Milwaukee’s richly textured neighborhoods.
