Drop in State School Revenue is Just More Than 10 Percent

District found ways to close $1.9 million budget gap despite cuts.

As expected, state aid to the Shorewood School District will drop a little more than 10 percent from last year, according to figures released Friday by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

The district will receive $3,631,021, compared to $4,039,196 in 2010-11, a drop of $408,175. The aid is based on final official enrollment counts figured on the third Friday in September. .

Statewide, 97 percent of districts saw a drop in state aid, according to the DPI. The state's biennial budget cut overall general aid to schools by 8.4 percent.

Primary savings came from the pension contributions set forth in the governor's budget repair bill, a successful April referendum that allowed the district to refinance some debt, a change in the teachers health-care plan and retirements.
