State Sen. Alberta Darling has introduced a bill aimed at toughening penalties for those who illegally conceal handguns.

The piece of legislation, authored by Darling (R-River Hills), would make it a felony to carry a concealed weapon without a license and/or if someonone is listed as prohibited from purchasing a weapon under the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.

In addition, if someone has already been convicted of a violent felony, they could face a mandatory prison sentence of 3 years.

“After talking with local law enforcement, it was clear they needed more help to put violent criminals off the street and behind bars,” Darling said. “This legislation targets dangerous criminals who shouldn’t be carrying weapons in the first place."

The legislation would bring Wisconsin's straw purchaser law in line with federal law and will help keep guns out of the hands of criminals Darling said.
