Contractor to Pick Up Cost of Botched Crosswalks

A state spokesperson said Tuesday neither the village nor state will be held responsible for additional construction costs.

The contractor hired to handle the East Capitol Drive reconstruction project will pick up any extra cost for the botched, asphalt-patched crosswalks, a state spokesman said Tuesday.

The contractor will take any financial hit as a result of extra work, ,  Wisconsin Department of Transportation spokesman Dennis Shook said.

"Neither Shorewood nor the state is going to pay for this," Shook said.

He added however, he is not sure what cost to the contractor would be.

"I don't even think (the contractor) knows that yet," Shook said.

The company hired to handle the $12 million state project, LaLonde Contractors, was suppose to wrap up construction by May 15 as stipulated in its contract with the state, but will now work into mid-June repairing the crosswalks and in some cases, replacing the entire brick walk with new material, Shook said.

Shorewood Department of Public Works Director Leeann Butschlick said the village has said replacing the entire crosswalk is the only way to really fix the problem, but added she wasn't sure what the contractors were doing to solve the patched crosswalks.

Butschlick added the village hasn't received anything informing them the contractor would be picking up the tab on the crosswalks repair costs.

A spokesperson for LaLonde Contractors couldn't be reached for comment Tuesday.

Shook said previously the schedule of the reconstruction project was pushed back because of severe July rainfall and a delay of construction material, which meant the bricks were laid too late in the year and didn’t have enough time for the adhesive to set before winter weather rolled in.

The Capitol Drive construction project repaved streets stretching from the Milwaukee River to the lakefront, replaced the Oak Leaf Trail Bridge, modernized street signals, addressed drainage issues and added some decorative features to the major street.
