Vice Presidential Debate: Live Chat in Milwaukee

Not only did things get a bit heated between U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan and Vice President Joe Biden on Thursday night, but there was a lively debate taking place in Pach's live blog as well.

Democrat Joe Biden went head to head against Republican Paul Ryan tonight in the first and only vice presidential debate of the campaign.

Patch readers from throughout the Milwaukee area exchanged their views and comments during our live blog from the debate. Here's a replay of what they were talking about in real time.

I have to smile at the irony -- President Obama 'lost' his debate by not being assertive enough, waiting politely for his turn, looking down when Romney was talking, etc. The Obama/Biden team learns the lesson and now Biden is castigated for being rude.
I would have called the debate a tie, with Biden having the slight advantage. I swear, Ryan was floundering a few times.
CowDung October 12, 2012 at 02:43 pm
I think it was a bit of overcompensation on Biden's part. He seemed to have crossed the line from 'aggressive/assertive' to 'angry/mean' on several occasions...

Paul Ryan Lies Most in Debate! CONGRATS, Paul!
Politifact Ryan, 2 Mostly False; 1 False; 1 Lie of the Year. Total 4 Lies Biden: 0 False; a few Half-truths (as Ryan also had) http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/article/2012/oct/11/fact-checking-vice-presidential-debate-between-joe/ FactCheck.org Ryan wrong on more than 6 claims. Biden wrong on 3 statements http://factcheck.org/2012/10/veep-debate-violations/ Paul Ryan: Keeping that lying tradition going since the Republican Convention!

@Schmitzy -
CBS was the only instapoll that showed Biden winning - it is clearly the outlier in the bunch! Perhaps you should worry about paying your debts instead of who won debates - time for Keithy to grow up and take some personal responsibility for his actions in life! Pay Hoffa his fifty ($50) before Hoffa has to call in his debt collection guys from Detroit!
James R Hoffa October 12, 2012 at 03:43 pm
@Bren -
Interesting how the great independent that you claim to be would be following the twitter feeds of such extreme lefty liberals as the ones you posted above! Bren = extreme lefty liberal in denial!
James R Hoffa October 12, 2012 at 03:46 pm
Right on AWD - USA, USA, USA!!!
ROMNEY/RYAN/THOMPSON 2012!!!
James R Hoffa October 12, 2012 at 03:53 pm
@Schmitzy -
Should you really be accusing someone else of LYING??? You've proven yourself to be the habitual LIAR around here! Where's Hoffa's fifty ($50)??? And race baiting yet again??? You've also proven yourself to be the biggest racist around here, as if importing a white candidate so that you guys in the Wood wouldn't have to deal with an African American representative in the state Assembly wasn't bad enough!!! Shame on you Keith Schmitz - what would your mother say?!?!
James R Hoffa October 12, 2012 at 03:57 pm
@Schmitzy -
Biden did what Biden does best - make Biden look like an ass! Where's Hoffa's fifty ($50), you "little wuss" that can't seem to man up to the wagers you make?!?! Remember - Detroit is just a phone call away!
James R Hoffa October 12, 2012 at 03:59 pm
@Ima Hippee -
Short, accurate, to the point - Hoffa likes it!
Daniell Ochoa October 12, 2012 at 04:00 pm
Typical republicans haha!!!! Blane the moderator cuz Ryan lost! Oh and CNN was based on people who watched, CBS was based on uncommitted voters and shows Biden ahead by 19 points!!! Ryan lost! Just shut it and take it!!!
James R Hoffa October 12, 2012 at 04:06 pm
@Taoist -
What Hoffa finds so funny is how you liberals worship the perjurer-in-chief, Mr. "I did not have sexual relations with that woman" Clinton, so very much! Did you wish it was you instead of Lewinsky that ended up with Clinton love stains on your clothing?
James R Hoffa October 12, 2012 at 04:08 pm
You trust the so-called 'fact-checkers' to give it to you straight?
Keep on drinking the kool-aide instead of thinking for yourself! Proof once again that the Dems are targeting the low-information, non-thinking voter!

James R Hoffa October 12, 2012 at 04:23 pm
ABC, CNN, and CNBC polls all show Ryan winning. CBS is the only outlier showing Biden as the winner.
Just like a blue-fister to erroneously believe that they are in the majority, when in fact, they are clearly in the minority, as will be definitely proven on November 6th! ROMNEY/RYAN/THOMPSON 2012!!!

Classy - I'll bet your family would be so proud to read your responses.
CowDung October 12, 2012 at 05:09 pm
The fact that the fact-checkers don't seem to agree should be an indication that perhaps they aren't getting it right...
John Q. Public October 12, 2012 at 05:14 pm
@Hoffa -
I was catching up on my reading and saw you comment that said "By referring to Ryan as 'Rand,' you're as disrespectful as Biden was tonight - no wonder you were so attracted to Biden's performance in this debate, as you're both disrespectful of the other side and don't take them seriously!" With that statement were you trying to be ironic or are you unaware of your own hypocracy? Simply by reading comments on Patch, JQP has determined that Hoffa is totally dismissive and disrespectful of the other side.

@John Q Public -
You really have to understand Taoist's and Hoffa's past interactions. Also, Hoffa has a problem with those who actively criticize Bush but then turn around and idolize Clinton and the Kennedy's.
James R Hoffa October 12, 2012 at 05:52 pm
@John Q. Public -
If you read the full past interactions, then you'll see that with serious and respectful liberals, such a Lyle Ruble, Randy 1949, etc., Hoffa is usually very respectful in return and a decent conversation can take place. It's only in response to nonsense, such as calling Paul Ryan 'Rand,' that Hoffa responds in kind.
Michael McClusky October 12, 2012 at 06:48 pm
There is a front page headline story about Wisconsin's politics and economy in The Economist, a British publication that is read worldwide. See, we are on the map!
Bren October 12, 2012 at 07:04 pm
Mike in OC I watched and enjoyed the entire debate. I didn't see morons or used car salesmen--perhaps you were watching something else on cable? ; )
I was very concerned about the format of the first debate, which placed the moderator far from the action, so to "speak." It was easy for both candidates (mostly Mitt) to steamroll the moderator. Last night's moderator didn't give an inch, I felt. Here's the question. When outright fabrications are being laid down in front of millions of people, what should one do? Obama "lost" the first debate because he was presidential and a gentleman. Personally I think lying is more offensive than interrupting. I would prefer a lie to be interrupted, no matter what side is presenting the falsehood. We the People deserve not to have our time wasted on b.s. And a lot of what Ryan was laying down was b.s., particularly in the areas of the economy and foreign policy. I felt Ryan's bringing up the traffic accident story was a cheap, crass attempt to unsettle an opponent who has experienced tremendous personal loss in this manner.
Bren October 12, 2012 at 07:07 pm
Mike in OC, my b.s. is well researched. ; )
Anti, the Nazis, really? Ryan set the tone by throwing down b.s. This was a vice presidential debate, not a playground argument. Romney and Ryan have both shown disrespect to the offices they seek, and offended our intelligence, in my view.
John Q. Public October 12, 2012 at 07:23 pm
@Hoffa -
JQP notes that you are using the "they did it first" rationale. If Hoffa has a problem with criticism of one politician's actions while another's is idolized, Hoffa will spend eternity responding! JQP thinks that Hoffa's message would be much better received by others if Hoffa's tongue wasn't like a sledge hammer.
James R Hoffa October 12, 2012 at 07:25 pm
@Bren -
Are you sure you were watching the same debate? What did Ryan lie about exactly? Biden was the one who was clearly lying his rear end off! He voted in favor of both wars, and not against them as he claimed last night! And he's continuing to lie about Libya! Biden also lied about how Ryan was being given more time by the moderator than him, when in reality, Biden was given over 2 minutes of additional time over Ryan, not including his laughs, interruptions, talk overs, cackles, etc. Biden also continued to double down on Obama's lies about Romney's tax plan. The moderator was slightly biased in favor of Biden - even the Washington Post admits to this! But continue to live in fantasy land - you always do!
John Q. Public October 12, 2012 at 07:32 pm
@Hoffa -
JQP thinks that Hoffa's irony meter needs calibration. Deep down, even Hoffa has to admit that, given Paul Ryan's proven interest in Ayn Rand's works, it was a clever "dis".
Lyle Ruble October 12, 2012 at 09:01 pm
@JRH....What's with you lately and your red herrings? I used to think you were your own man and truly independent; but, as of late you are over the top in your Republican partisanship. When will we see your independence again? Or was independence just a ruse?
John Q. Public October 12, 2012 at 10:22 pm
@Hoffa and @CowDung -
Perhaps the two of you should outline exactly where the "so-called 'fact-checkers'" went astray. JQP would be interested to get your take on it and I hazard to guess that other readers would appreciate being enlightened as well. I look forward to your analysis.

So? What was used and what harm does it cause? Although ironic this may provide more good thanRead More harm. What is written on the application sign?
Cricket June 11, 2013 at 01:31 pm
The bluff and other areas need to be planted with things that will snuff out the weeds. They areRead More harmful to animals and possibly birds, of which there are many at atwater. Obviously not many animals but there are squirrels and rabbits and other native mammals. Not to mention the kids at the play area. Most adult humans can handle an occasional wiff of a pesticide but not children or animals. I have held several pesticide licenses in my day so I have had much course work on this. I am surprised the village has done this but I know restoration is about to begin - again - on the bluff and perhaps they are trying to rid the bluff of all the weeds. It is a shame that the 15+ kids they hire every year can't be up there weeding instead. I don't know what else they could be doing as the village has reduced the amount of annual flower beds that need to be maintained.
PaulRevere June 10, 2013 at 12:40 pm
The liberal minded Patch had it going their way for some time. Then, the contrary opinions became aRead More "voice to be heard". So, like all liberal media, just shut down the "free speech". Speech that educates the people is a NO-NO in the world of "public education". Have no fear, other avenues to educate the public is on the way.
CowDung June 10, 2013 at 12:53 pm
Given the amount of liberal propaganda that is posted around here, one does have to wonder if PatchRead More intended to make it more difficult to reply to comments (and set the record straight)...
Mike Stevens June 14, 2013 at 07:20 am
Wow, PaulRevere, AKA the hardest working person in America, who only takes 1 day per month off andRead More who believes all evil is related to public schooling, has time to not only comment on St. Louis area Patch sites, but on Milwaukee area sites as well? Paul, perhaps you should go back to school to check your grammar--other avenues to educate the public ARE on the way, not IS on the way. Oh, you must be too busy working 20 hours a day (but finding tons of time to comment on several Patch sites) to check grammar

Sure Keith. I am sure every time you use the term Tea Bagger it is not vulgar. The symbol for yourRead More failed recall movement was a Blue Fist. No one wants to be ruled by a fist and I don't see how that is vulgar when your own logo was a blue fist. Try again.
Keith Schmitz June 6, 2013 at 01:03 pm
Are you assuming we're stupid Steve? Don't. BTW -- you called yourselves Tea Baggers. We're onlyRead More using the term you selected. What a great PR roll-up for this group of Neanderthals. You're problem with that any fister reference is usually the speaker feels it is where his head should be.

I got the name wrong, it was "Bellmore", not Belmont. It was part of rollout of what atRead More the time was being referred to as "Patch 2.0" in the press. It was rolled out to five towns in the Long Island, NY area in September of last year.
