Ann McKaig Appointed to Shorewood Village Board

A 12-year community resident, McKaig has been active on the Parks Commission, the Recreation Advisory Committee and more.

Ann McKaig has been sworn in as Shorewood's newest trustee, after the Village Board appointed her from a pool of seven applicants Wednesday night.

As a resident of 12 years, McKaig has been an active Shorewood community member through volunteering in government, schools and the community. She said she decided to apply for the trustee position to become a part of the village's continued growth.

"I think Shorewood is going through an exciting shift and embracing its potential as a destination village," she said. "We need to make sure residents feel the benefits of the shift, as well as receive the village's support in overcoming the challenges."

McKaig was sworn in Thursday, and her first Village Board meeting will be Aug. 12. The trustee seat became available with the resignation of Don Ford in early May.

McKaig has served on the Shorewood Parks Commission since 2006, and became the chair of the commission last year. She has also served on the Shorewood Recreation Advisory Committee since 2010. McKaig was a founding member of Friends of Estabrook Park in 2007, and she continues to be involved with the organization.

As a homeowner who experienced sewer backups in 2010, McKaig has been active in discussions about sanitary sewer improvements in Basin 6.

After receiving a bachelor's degree from Northwestern University and a masters degree in art therapy from the University of Illinois at Chicago, McKaig held a varied 20-year career as a therapist, program consultant, and finally, an art therapy instructor at Mount Mary College. She left the college in 2005 to raise three children.

Last year, McKaig worked as the campaign advisor for Tammy Bockhorst's successful campaign for the Village Board.

Eight applicants originally applied for the opening, but attorney Ariane Strombom withdrew her application before the start of the special Village Board meeting Wednesday night.

One of the applicants was environmental consultant Paul Zovic, who lost to Bockhorst and trustee Pat Linnane in the April trustee election. Other applicants included attorney Brian Spahn; accountant Brian Leadley; Greendale High School teacher Ben Hubing; attorney Nate Cade; and Christopher Miotke, an operation specialist at UMB Financial Services.
