As the year comes to a close, we all tend to look back at what exactly we've accomplished over the past 365 days.

With the Sen. Alberta Darling recall effort in full swing, and Rep. Sandy Pasch announcing she would challenge for the 8th Senate seat, coupled with plenty of other local news, we were pretty busy at Shorewood Patch in the month of May.

Dozens of people braved the rain at Whitefish Bay's Cahill Park on May 6, to hear directly from state Democratic Rep. Sandy Pasch that she is launching a campaign to challenge Republican state Sen. Alberta Darling for her 8th District Senate seat in a July recall election.

As the Republican-controlled Wisconsin legislature introduced legislation which would allow the carrying of concealed weapons, Shorewood Police Chief David Banaszynski said May 11 he hopes state lawmakers make gun training a requirement and include a permit system.

The site at 1111 E. Capitol Dr. with used to house the Riverbrook Restaurant and Pig 'n Whistle was slated to be demolished by village officials at a Village Board meeting May 16. The building was razed in June.

The state Government Accountability Board May 31 certified that the signatures gathered in the Sen. Alberta Darling effort are valid, a decision that paves the way for a July 12 recall election.

The board agreed to strike 2,813 of the challenged signatures, while validating 22,243 signatures. The petitioners needed to gather 20,343 signatures to force a recall election in the 8th Senate District, which includes Shorewood, Whitefish Bay, Fox Point and Menomonee Falls.

Saying they need to send a message to residents that they are serious about addressing Shorewood’s sewer woes, village trustees on May 23 approved their comprehensive sewer plan with a $34.1 million price tag.
