Police Report: OWI, Car Gets Airborne during Accident

A roundup of the latest from the Shorewood police reports.

A 47-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested Sunday after police say he was driving under the influence of alcohol, with a 16-year-old in the passenger seat.

The man was initially stopped after police observed him traveling westbound in the 2600 block of East Capitol Drive with expired registration tags on his license plate.

He smelled of alcohol, and had slurred speech when approached by an officer, according to the report. He would fail a sobriety test and had a .09 blood alcohol content.

It is the man’s first drunken driving offense.

  • Two adults were taken to a local hospital Tuesday after a car accident in which a car became airborne and smacked into a tree. Police are still trying to piece together what exactly happened, but believe a Shorewood woman accidently footed the accelerator instead of the brake as she backed out of her driveway, traveled over a curb and a six-foot embankment and at some point became airborne before crashing into a tree in a neighbor’s yard. The driver wasn’t taken to the hospital, police say.
  • During a traffic stop Sunday, police say they observed a passenger throw out a clear plastic bag from the car. The bag was found to contain broken glass, which used to be a glass pipe. Police say a 20-year-old man and 18-year-old man, both from Milwaukee, admitted to throwing out the pipe, which they used to smoke marijuana. However, the men got off with just a littering citation and traffic ticket.
  • A Shorewood teenager was arrested Sept. 1 for underage possession after police found him in possession of alcohol. Police were tipped off after an unknown student told a school official the teenager had liquor.
  • A Shorewood mother likely got a scare Sept. 1 after police called to say they had her 4-year-old child at their station. According to police, a newspaper carrier found the 4-year-old in the lobby of an apartment building in the 1300 block of East Elmdale Court around 6 a.m. The child said she was alone and her mother had gone to work, so concerned for the safety of the child, the carrier took her to the Shorewood police station. Police were able to locate and reunite the child and mother a short time later.
  • A stolen bicycle was retrieved Saturday after an eyewitness saw two juveniles and two adults steal an unlocked Magna mountain bicycle from a bike rack at the and called police with a description of the four suspects. Police later tracked down the suspects in the 3500 block of North Downer Avenue.
  • The owner of a garage in the 2500 block of East Menlo Boulevard called police Sunday after noticing blue marker was used to graffiti the door to the garage. Police say the damage was done sometime between Aug. 30 and Saturday and an estimate of the damage is not yet available.
  • An anonymous person called police Saturday to report graffiti on a brick pillar near North Downer Avenue and East Menlo Boulevard. White spray paint was used and a damage estimate is not yet available, police say.
