Police Annual Bicycle Sale Slated for May 19

The department will hold its 35th annual bicycle sale, with items ranging from $5 to $50. Police are also selling two lawnmowers and a leaf blower.

Looking for a new bicycle just in time for the summer? You may be in luck. The Shorewood Police Department’s annual bike sale is right around the corner on May 19.

Police will have more than 30 used bicycles up for sale this year, all of which are lost and found or confiscated items. The sale starts at 9 a.m. in the back of the police station, 3936 N. Murray Ave. Get there early as the first 10 people get first dibs.

Sgt. Charles Vanderschaaf runs the sale and admits some of the bikes need some work, but most require just minor fixes. Bicycle prices typically range from $5 to $50, though Vanderschaaf said he has yet to price the bikes. He said most of what's for sale this year isn’t big enough for an adult, but rather built for children and teenagers.

This is the department's 30th sale. Vanderschaaf said the sale has yielded the department more than $700 each of the past two years.

Money raised will go toward funding for bike safety courses, bicycle equipment and possibly the launch of a children's bicycle rodeo.
