'National Night Out' Block Party is Tuesday

Annual family-friendly event gives police a chance to connect with residents and discuss crime prevention.

UPDATE: This event has been canceled due to severe weather.

The one block party this year Shorewood police are guaranteed not to crash is set for Tuesday evening at Atwater Elementary.

National Night Out, a block party against crime, starts at 4:30 p.m. and is a chance for the community to meet their neighbors and local law enforcement.

Over 15,000 communities across America and Canada will be participating in National Night Out over the summer months, in an effort to increase neighborhood spirit and generate community support for anti-crime programs.

Shorewood Police Officer Cy Kaderlik is organizing this year’s event at Atwater, 2100 E. Capitol Dr., and said it’s a chance for the community to better its relationship with police.

“Residents are so use to only seeing us when they need us or when they are in trouble.” Kaderlik said. “It’s a good way to show police in a different setting.”

He added the event is also important as it informs residents about crime and drug prevention.

As part of the night's many activities, Wesley Manko, from Defense Works, will give a demonstration on practical self defense measures, Glendale police will have their K9, "Boomer," perform a demonstration and North Shore Fire Department will conduct a children's activity called the "flame house." ADT Security Services will also be on hand to provide home safety tips.

There'll be fun for the kids, with a showing of Toy Story 3 on an outdoor movie screen, and free popcorn donated by the Shorewood Men's Club. Local groups like Shorewood Little League will be in attendance, as well.

Kaderlik said in all, more than 30 local businesses and agencies will participate in the block party.

Shorewood didn't hold last year's event because of construction on East Capitol Drive, so the community is likely eager for Tuesday's festivities, Kaderlik added.
