Murder Suspect Will Stand Trial

A motion to dismiss the homicide charges against Homer Washington was denied by a Milwaukee judge Tuesday.

The 21-year-old Milwaukee man charged with murdering 57-year-old Clarence Charles in his Oakland Avenue apartment building learned Tuesday that he will stand trial, according to Patch's media partners at WISN 12 News.

The suspect, Homer Washington, was in court Tuesday for a preliminary hearing. His attorney made a motion to dismiss the homicide charges against Washington, but the motion was denied by Judge Rosa Barillas, according to online court records.

Shorewood police found Charles stabbed to death in his apartment at 4460 Oakland Ave. at about 8 p.m. July 15. They were dispatched to the scene on a missing persons report from a family member.

Washington told police that he and Washington had a lover's quarrel that ended with Charles threatening to kill Washington with a knife. Charles eventually stabbed himself in the neck, and after gaining control of the knife, Washington stabbed Charles a dozen more times to stop him from screaming, according to a criminal complaint.

WISN 12 News talked to Washington's mother, Marilyn Washington, who claims her son was acting in self defense.

"If I had to fight for my life, I think things probably could've turned out the same way," she told WISN. "If you're being attacked, what do you think is going to happen?"
