Milwaukee Man Nearly Triple Legal Limit in 3rd OWI Arrest

A 29-year-old man is accused of his third drunken driving offense, after Shorewood police initially pulled him over for driving without headlights on.

A 29-year-old Milwaukee man allegedly driving drunk at nearly three times the legal limit has fielded his third such charge.

Andrew Cegielski was charged in Milwaukee County Circuit Court May 22 with two counts related to operating while intoxicated third offense. If convicted, he faces a minimum $600 fine and 45 days in county jail, but could be sentenced up to one year in jail. However, those sentences are tripled because he was arrested with a blood alcohol content of at least 0.20.

According to the criminal complaint:

On March 28 at 2:23 a.m., Shorewood police pulled over Cegielski in the 3900 block of North Frederick Avenue for driving without his headlights on, and a defective license plate lamps, according to the court documents.

Police say Cegielski smelled of alcohol when an officer made contact during the traffic stop. Cegielski was transported to the Shorewood police station, where he was asked to perform sobriety tests, but refused. He was then taken to a local hospital for a blood draw to determine his blood alcohol content, which registered at 0.20, according to the criminal complaint.

Cegielski has been convicted for drunken driving in 2007 and 2008.

His initial court appearance is scheduled for July 8.
