Obituary: Harold Schmitz

Harold Schmitz passed away on June 22, 2013 at the age of 97.

Resident of Luther Manor in Wauwatosa, former longtime resident of Shorewood. Beloved husband for 57 years of the late Eleanor J. Schmitz (nee Hammersmith). Loving father of Linda (Patrick) Devitt and Arthur Schmitz. Dearest brother of Eileen (Romney) Brown. Fond uncle of James Hammersmith and Ann (James) Calano. Also survived by other family and friends.

Harold was born in Milwaukee on March 14, 1916 the son of Peter and Mary (nee Zimmermann) Schmitz. He graduated from North Division High School and Layton School of Art. After serving with the U.S. Army during World War II as a cartographer in the South Pacific from 1942 to 1945, he returned to Milwaukee and his job at Hammersmith-Kortmeyer Printing Company. He eventually retired from Northwestern Publishing House as Art Director after 33 years.

Many, many thanks to the Luther Manor RCAC staff and Luther Manor Hospice for their love, support, and compassionate care. Family will greet friends on Friday, June 28, from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at Forest Home Cemetery Landmark Chapel, 2405 West Forest Home Avenue, Milwaukee, followed by a service honoring Harold’s life at 2:00. Interment with military honors will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Harold’s name may be made to Luther Manor Foundation, 4545 N. 92nd Street, Wauwatosa, WI 53225-4899 or the Wisconsin Humane Society, 4500 W. Wisconsin Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53208-3156 or a charity of your choice.
