The Best of Patch: June

A month-by-month look back at the top stories of 2011.

As the year comes to a close, we all tend to look back at what exactly we've accomplished over the past 365 days.

With the Sen. Alberta Darling recall effort in full swing, and Rep. Sandy Pasch announcing she would challenge for the 8th Senate seat, coupled with plenty of other local news, we were pretty busy at Shorewood Patch in the month of June.

We learned that Republican Alberta Darling raised almost $500,000 during a recall race against challenger Democrat Sandy Pasch. According to the Government Accountability Board, Darling garnered $22,500 from one donor and 43 others gave more than $1,000.

Shorewood finalized an agreement with Milwaukee developer the Mandel Group in June for a retail and apartment development set for the two parking lots near Sendik’s. Shorewood agreed to help finance the $34.81 million, six-story building which will include retail space for Walgreens, 84 apartment units and two parking structures.

Shorewood High School track coach Dominic Newman was mistakenly handcuffed at gunpoint when police thought he was driving a stolen car. Police released him soon after and said the incident was a "big misunderstanding."

More than 100 Shorewood students walked across the high school auditorium stage, completing their high school education. The ceremony included speeches from Superintendent Blane McCann, high school Prinicpal Matthew Joynt, senior class president Basha Harris, senior Neil Majeski and musical performances from graduating seniors.

Thad Nation, a former spokesperson for former Gov. Jim Doyle's administration, was appointed to the Shorewood Village Board in June after trustee Margaret Hickey resigned because she moved outside Shorewood.
