Shorewood Patch Week in Review

In case you missed it, here are some of the stories from last week, you need to know about.

A four-lane bowling alley is currently being renovated at Shorewood High School with the intention of creating a living artifact of the community's rich history. School and recreation department officials also hope the bowling alley becomes a popular spot for community members and, as a result, a money-maker for the recreation department.

Kristopher Rowe, the leader of an effort to recall state Sen. Alberta Darling said he was stunned at the turnout organizational meeting on Saturday. “We expected maybe 40 people and got 140,” said Rowe of the meeting held in the Shorewood Public Library. “The only advertising we had was our Facebook page.”

Former state lawmaker Sheldon Wasserman said Monday he would consider taking on , but he's worried how the 8th District will look once the Republican-controlled Legislature finishes drawing new legislative districts.

With a $13 million School District referendum approved for the April 5 ballot, and an ambitious $71.5 million plan proposed by village officials for much needed sewer repairs looming, what does that mean for the taxpayers’ pocket book? With the details of Gov. Scott Walker’s biennial budget proposal not completely clear, Shorewood officials are still trying to figure out what significant cuts in state aid mean for the financial future fo the village and school district. The bottom line is, regardless of whether the budget repair bill sees its way through the Legislature, there will be a $1.2 billion cut in state aid to schools and local governments over two years, if the budget proposal passes.

New business is flowing fast into the Shorewood area, and what flows better than a locally-brewed beer? Milwaukee’s Big Bay Brewing Company has come a long way since November, 2010 when the first batch of their beer hit store shelves and restaurant bars. You can now find their beer at hundreds of retailers in Wisconsin, but what you won’t find is a company location — until now.

A Milwaukee developer may have found a new home for Shorewood's Walgreens as it released details Friday for a $32 million, six-story apartment and retail development on North Oakland Avenue.

Under the plans by The Mandel Group, a  three-building structure would occupy the entire Sendik’s parking lot at 4027 N. Oakland Ave.
