The Shorewood fireworks will light up the night sky as usual this July 4 at Atwater Beach, but not before a host of other Independence Day activities paint the village red, white and blue.

The Shorewood School Board didn't extend teacher contracts at Tuesday's board meeting, rejecting a request from the union one day before Gov. Scott Walker’s budget repair bill takes effect. School Board President Paul Zovic said the board will not approve new contracts, even though the Shorewood Education Association has asked for an extension of the current contract that expires on Friday.

In what has become a reoccurring scene throughout state Sen. Alberta Darling’s district, protesters once again gathered in front of her office Tuesday - this time in Menomonee Falls. In a protest sponsored by Wisconsin Jobs Now, a group of about 50 to 60 people demanded both the Republican senator and Gov. Scott Walker call a special session to secure additional unemployment benefits in Wisconsin.

Walgreens’ employees got a surprise Tuesday night when a Shorewood man walked into the retailer bleeding from a stab wound. He was trying to find first aid items to treat himself, after being stabbed in his left shoulder, according to the police report. He said he didn't want to get police involved, but Walgreens' staff still phoned police.

will see a little more than 10 percent cut in state aid next year, according to data released Friday by the state Department of Public Instruction. The district will receive $414,000 less next year or $3,624,983 next year compared to $4,039,266 received this year, according to DPI.

Kicking off Shorewood's Summer Concert Series, the Milwaukee Bucks in-house band, Streetlife with Warren Wiegratz, drew a large crowd to Hubbard Park Thursday.
