Boston Marathon Bombing: 12 Shorewood Runners Entered Race

Ten of 12 Shorewood residents signed up have crossed the finish line at the famous race, and three are reported safe, after at least two explosions rocked the marathon about three hours after the winners crossed the line.

With three fatalities and more than 100 injured in an explosion at the Boston Marathon, local residents are seeking information about their friends and family participating in the run.

Ten out of the 12 Shorewood residents signed up to run in the famous race have crossed the finish line, according to the Boston Marathon website.

Three are reported safe. 

Shorewood resident Helaine Hickson told her friend Carolyn Bucior she is safe and wasn't near the finish line when explosions erupted.

"She is OK," Shorewood resident Bucior said. "She crossed the line 30 minutes before the blasts went off. She wrote and said she was '3 blocks away getting my race bag when blasts happened.'"

George Darrow is neighbors with marathoner Christine Merkel, and spoke with her daughter Monday night, informing him Merkel's run was cut short, but she is safe. 

Darrow's wife Nancy Peske said, "I managed to breathe while George ran across the street to check on Chris — I was afraid she'd gone."

Mary Beth Aasen of Shorewood told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel her daughter, Maggie, a sophomore at Boston College, was running in the marathon but was not injured. Maggie was in Mile 23 when other runners began talking about an incident ahead. People then starting yelling, "stop running, stop running."

Shorewood resident Abigail Algiers is among the local runners. She is safe and told Patch media partners WISN she completed the race just minutes before the explosion.

"It sounded like a canon or something. It was loud. We turned around, and it was a huge cloud of smoke, and then saw another one, and then every body was like, 'Oh my gosh, what do we do?'" Algiers said. 

, and competes in several marathons each year, one of them being the Boston Marathon.

According to an Associated Press report, two explosions near the finish line of the Boston Marathon had people carrying bloody spectators into the medical tent. The latest report indicates that at least two people are dead and dozens are injured.

"There are a lot of people down," the AP quoted one man saying. The explosions happened about three hours after the winners crossed the finish line.

NBC News reported fire engines, police and emergency medical personnel were headed to the scene. An affiliate reporter told NBC News she heard two loud explosions, and that "everybody kind of ducked and hit the ground," and Jackie Bruno, reporter for New England Cable News said she saw people with significant injuries, including one person with a leg blown off.

"Runners were coming in and saw unspeakable horror," Bruno said.
