Shorewood Inept in Handling Trash on Parkways

Shorewood Department of Public Works is unable to control dumped furniture and trash on parkways; who is in charge?

A few weeks ago, there was dumped furniture and trash on the parkways in the 4400 block of North Woodburn Street. I had very little success in having trash removed in the past, and as there are a number of rental units on that block, there is dumped furniture and trash on the parkways often.

And through experience, I learned that the Shorewood Department of Public Works and the building code departments do not address the problem on their own. I also found out that the police department is not involved in the enforcement of the village ordinance that regulates trash and dumping.

I first called the central Village Hall number, and got the "customer service" desk.Β  They were not quite sure of who would handle the problem, but sent me over to the building code department. The person who answered the phone there did not know what their procedures were, and transferred me to the head of the department. She followed up and took pictures and referred the problem to the DPW, but it took about a week for the dumped funiture to disappear.

After that experience, and in the week before Easter, there again was funiture and trash on the parkways in two different locations.Β

This time I thought I would just call DPW directly, as they are the ones who are suppose to remediate these problems. The trash pile across the street included a recyling container (about a week before Waste Management would be picking it up) and some upholstered furniture. Down the block was a white kitchen table.

When I called DPW, the woman who answered didn't seem to really get the point that there was furniture and trash on the parkway, and what should be done about it. When she heard recyclable she said I should call WM to have them take care of it. I responded that it was not my recyclables, but recyclables that have been left when the pickup is not due, and there was also furniture and other trash.

She then said that she would tell the operations manager and have it taken care of.

That did not happen.

The recyclables, furniture and trash were there all through the Easter weekend. It seems that is standard procedure on our block almost every holiday weekend lately.

Recyclables are finally gone, but the white kitchen table is still there, albeit knocked down now, and a white chair has been dumped on top of it now.

Wonder if that will be there through this coming weekend as well?
