Shorewood Businesses Help Kids Take Charge with Unique Job Shadow Event

Shorewood Business Improvement District hosts the second Kids Take Charge event, an interactive job shadowing experience that lets kids try careers on for size.

Sushi chef, veterinarian, baker….career possibilities are endless these days and a group of fifth and sixth graders from Atwater Elementary and Lake Bluff Elementary Schools will get to try these jobs on for size during Kids Take Charge Day from 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 25.

This partnership between Shorewood public schools and the Shorewood business district offers kids the chance to come in and interview business owners and managers about their jobs as well as do some hands-on work that relates to that business.  The following Shorewood businesses are taking part in Kids Take Charge Day. 

  • NaNa Asian Fusion & Sushi Bar:  Sushi Chef –Students will learn how to prepare and roll different types of sushi
  • Goody Gourmets:  Candy Maker - learn how to dip chocolate, add sprinkles, et-yum-cetera!
  • Miss Cupcake: Baker’s Assistant - Kids will stir up some fun and maybe invent a new cupcake flavor.
  • Swanky Seconds:  Fashion Consultant: Students will learn about fashion design and merchandising at this popular boutique.
  • Indulgence Chocolatiers: - Sweet Retail Assistant: Learn about packaging, selling (and sampling) scrumptious chocolates.
  • Shorewood Family Chiropractic – Office Assistant:  Aspiring young doctors will learn more about this medical profession and take part in interactive foot scanning and posture analysis.
  • So Cool Crafts – Budding Artists:  Kids will explore entrepreneurship in this creative design space.
  • Robert Laurence Salon – Salon Assistant: Students will learn about beauty careers like stylist and manicurist.
  • North Shore Bank – Assistant Banker:  Kids interested in finance and money get some hands-on banking experience.
  • Patch - Junior Reporter: Student reporters will get the scoop on local happenings and write a story for Patch.
  •  Shorewood Press –Printer Apprentice:  One of Benjamin Franklin’s first jobs was as a printer’s apprentice.  Kids will take on the 21st century version of this career.
  • North Star American Bistro - Assistant Chef:  Kids learn the ins and outs of running a restaurant business.
  • SHOP- Fashion Merchandiser:  Fashionistas will rack up some knowledge on fashion merchandising at this style hot spot.
  • Harleys for Men –Men’s Fashion Consultant:  Kids with fashion flair with get the opportunity to set up a display and learn about retail and fashion careers.
  • Dr. Betsy Delich/Chiropractic Company in Shorewood – Students will learn about chiropractic careers as well as massage therapist.

The BID will pay participating students a fair wage during their two hour shifts and proceeds go to the SEED Foundation to benefit the Shorewood School District.
