About the artist: Slava Yanovsky, a Shorewood resident since 1980, created a large folk art piece for the Shorewood Public Library as a counter-point to the technology present in a modern library. Yanovsky was originally trained as a printmaker then began experimenting with cutting zinc and copper etching plates into weather vanes. Today, he approaches folk art in his own creative way with boldly-carved wood whirligigs and other whimsical objects.

Is the "Welcome New Neighbors" program a function of Village government?
Welcome New Neighbors Program January 15, 2014 at 04:16 PM
Hi Bob! How've you been? The Welcome Neighbors Program is a collaborative effort that combines the Village, Schools, BID and organizations to welcome new residents and inform folks about what's happening over here. You might like to stop in to Indulgence Chocolatier on Saturday Feb 8 - you can help me greet the crowd!
Bob McBride January 15, 2014 at 04:45 PM
Actually, my reason for asking is that, according to a recent announcement here, the BID has just signed some sort of contract with a marketing firm that includes the person who, to my knowledge, runs the "Welcome New Neighbors" program. Is that person also receiving some sort of compensation for the work they're doing for "Welcome New Neighbors"?
Welcome New Neighbors Program January 15, 2014 at 05:05 PM
Hi Bob - that is me! And so yes, I will be running events for the BID - and doing the once a month events for Welcome Neighbors. The Village, the BID, and a few other groups support the Welcome Neighbors Program which pays me a few hours a month to run the program. We have many volunteers helping out, which helps add to the success of the program.

Again - we could use both of you as volunteers for that and others - (though you are both residents of Whitefish Bay, I believe).
Bob McBride January 15, 2014 at 05:09 PM
I was really just interested in the relationship you had with the Village, Schools and BID in your position with Welcome New Neighbors and how that relates to the other relationship you have with the BID as part of a marketing firm that has a contract to perform services for the BID. So you've answered my question in that regard. Thanks.

Lots of great events! It's so marvelous to have these for welcoming new neighbors and filling them in on Shorewood living.
